Mauritania's Abdelaziz suspends presidential campaign
2009-06-04
Former Mauritanian junta leader Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz officially suspended his presidential campaign on Wednesday (June 3rd), Journal Tahalil reported. The decision comes a day after Mauritanian political rivals agreed during Senegal-led mediation talks to postpone the presidential election from June 7th to July 18th. On Thursday, Mauritanian political and military leaders are expected to sign the agreement, which also establishes a transitional government before the July election. Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade will attend the signing ceremony.
