Mauritania political rivals mull presidential election delay
2009-06-02
Following five days of Senegal-led mediation talks in Dakar, Mauritanian political rivals are expected to decide whether to postpone the presidential election from Saturday (June 7th) to July 18th, local and international press reported on Tuesday. International mediators from the African Union, the UN, the Arab League and the EU proposed the delay. They also called for a national unity government to be in place before the election. Some of the participants in the talks "have agreed to the proposals, others have asked for clarifications", AFP quoted Senegalese Foreign Minister Cheikh Tidiane Gadio as saying.
