Mauritania mediation continues amid launch of presidential campaign

Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade returned to Dakar from Nouakchott late Thursday (May 14th) after meeting with Mauritanian politicians as part of a joint mediation initiative with African Union Commission chief Jean Ping. Wade and Ping held discussions with former junta leader turned presidential candidate Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz, former president Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdellahi and opposition leader Ahmed Ould Daddah. "I am leaving an optimist, I’m not saying there was 100% agreement, but on the essential things I think that convergences exist," AFP quoted Wade as saying.
Senegalese Foreign Minister Cheikh Tidiane Gadio is continuing mediation talks on Friday, when the official presidential campaign begins. After speaking with the envoys on Thursday, however, Abdelaziz asserted to reporters that there would be no delay in the presidential election scheduled for June 6th.
