2009-05-14

Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade, African Union Commission Chairman Jean Ping and UN representative Said Dinnit arrived Thursday (May 14th) in Nouakchott on a joint mediation initiative aimed at resolving the political crisis in Mauritania, local and international press reported. Deposed President Sidi Cheikh Ould Abdellahi arrived in Nouakchott from Lemden to meet with President Wade and his accompanying delegation, Journal Tahalil reported.

In related news, Mauritania's Independent National Elections Commission (CENI) on Wednesday (May 13th) promised a "free and open" presidential election on June 6th, PANA reported. Most of the commission's 15 members served during the 2007 election of Abdellahi, CENI Chairman Cheikh Saad Bouh Kamara was quoted as saying. General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz resigned as junta leader last month to run for president. Three other candidates will vie for the presidency.
