RSF decries Algeria ban on French newspapers
2009-04-09
The press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Wednesday (April 8th) criticised Algeria for banning three French weeklies on the eve of presidential elections. In their latest issues, L'Express, Marianne and Le Journal du Dimanche published articles criticising President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Reporters Without Borders called the ban "disgraceful" and said it violated press freedom and democratic standards.
Also Wednesday, the international human rights watchdog Amnesty International (AI) called on the winner of Algeria's presidential election to address the issue of wide-spread human rights abuses in the country. "Algeria's new president must seize the opportunity to tackle the culture of impunity that has prevailed since the 1990s," the organisation said in a statement.
