Libya begins mediation effort in Mauritania

A delegation from Libya met with Mauritanian junta leader Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz Wednesday night in Nouakchott as part of a mediation effort, AFP reported, citing unnamed diplomatic sources. The group will travel to Lemden on Thursday (February 13th) for additional talks with deposed Mauritanian president Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.
Also Wednesday, the European Union welcomed sanctions imposed on Mauritania last week by the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council. EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel affirmed Brussels' full support for the AU measures and said EU member states could take similar action. He added, however, that the European Commission is ready to unfreeze development aid to Mauritania if the country restores democratic rule.
