2009-02-09
A senior member of Mauritania's ruling junta accused the African Union (AU) of imposing sanctions on the country last week without considering "positive developments on the ground", Journal Tahalil reported on Sunday (February 8th). The AU "hid the willingness" of the junta "to return to constitutional order", Colonel Ahmedou Bemba Ould Baye wrote Sunday on his personal website.
In related news Sunday, the opposition Rally of Democratic Forces (RFD) rejected a constitutional amendment referendum planned for June 20th. According to the RFD statement, the party opposes any amendment to the constitution.
