Mauritania sets date for presidential elections
2009-01-06
A special Mauritanian election-planning panel announced Monday (January 5th) that presidential elections will be held on May 30th, local and international press reported. The date is expected to be approved Tuesday by junta leader General Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz.
The leader of the Mauritanian majority Rally of Democratic Forces (RFD), Ahmed Ould Daddah, said Monday that Abdelaziz is planning to run in the elections, and expressed concerns over the participation of the military. Reuters quoted Communication Minister Mohamed Abderrahmane Ould Moine as saying that military officers or magistrates would only be able to run for president if they left those positions.
