AU ministers meet to discuss Mauritanian president's release

2008-12-22

The African Union Peace and Security Council will meet in Addis Ababa on Monday (December 22nd) to discuss deposed Mauritanian President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdellahi's release from house arrest on Sunday, local and international press reported. Ministers from Algeria and Tunisia will attend today's meeting. "We are happy about the release of President Abdellahi. General (Mohamed Ould Abdel) Aziz fulfilled part of his commitment but that is not enough," AFP quoted the AU's Jean Ping as saying on Sunday.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed reports of Abdellahi's freedom. "The Secretary-General reiterates his call for the prompt restoration of constitutional order in Mauritania in the interest of peace and respect for the rule of law in the country," a statement released Sunday by the UN added.
