Mauritanian junta under pressure to free deposed president

2008-12-14

After meeting in Brussels Friday (December 12th) to discuss the situation in Mauritania, the United Nations, the Arab League, the African Union, the EU and other international organisations called once again for the unconditional release of deposed President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdellahi, local and international press reported. "The members of the high level mission to Mauritania particularly took note of the commitment of [junta leader] General Abdel Aziz to unconditionally release President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi on December 24th 2008 at the latest," ANI quoted the African Union as saying in a statement. Abdellahi was moved from Nouakchott to house arrest in his hometown of Lemden in mid-November.

Meanwhile, Mauritanian Prime Minister Prime Minister Moulaye Ould Mohamed Leghdaf announced Saturday that a series of meetings aimed at setting a date for the presidential elections would begin on December 27th.
