French delegation discuss post-coup crisis in Mauritania

2008-12-01

An envoy for French President Nicolas Sarkozy held a series of talks with Mauritanian officials over the weekend in a bid to find a solution to the country's post-coup political crisis, AFP and Arabic daily Asharq al-Awsat reported on Sunday (November 30th). The French delegation met with ousted President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdellahi in his hometown of Lemden, where he is being held under house arrest by the military junta. French officials also met with ruling junta members and opposition Democratic Forces (RFD) leader Ahmed Ould Daddah. A French source was quoted as saying that the visit was on behalf of France and not the EU.

A separate international delegation led by French Minister of State Alain Joyandet and AU Peace and Security Commissioner Ramadan Lamamrana will begin a 3-day visit to Mauritania on December 7th to discuss ending the current political stalemate.
