Mauritanian junta leader signals intention to step down

General Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz, leader of the current junta in power in Mauritania, signalled Friday (November 28th) that his High Council of State eventually intends to step down. "We did not undertake this action [the coup] with the aim to stay in power," AMI quoted him as saying in a speech on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of Mauritania's independence. The general called on the Mauritanian people to support the government's efforts to ensure free and fair presidential elections.
