Algeria ends presidential term limits; Bouteflika plan passes by overwhelming margin

2008-11-12

Both chambers of the Algerian parliament voted almost unanimously on Wednesday (November 12th) to approve constitutional amendments proposed by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, local and international press reported. Of 529 votes cast, 500 were in favour of adopting the draft revisions and 21 were opposed, with 8 abstentions. The five amendments include one which abolishes presidential term limits, effectively permitting Bouteflika to run for a third term in April 2009. The president has not announced his candidacy.

Meanwhile, Said Saadi, the head of opposition party RCD (Rally for Culture and Democracy), held a press conference on Tuesday (November 11th) to announce his intention to run for president, according to El Khabar. He said his plan is contingent, however, on a "large and effective international presence" at the 2009 elections.

Algeria without Bouteflika is like child without his mother. Fortunately, Abdelaziz Belkhadem is here.

The despot Bouteflika just violated the Algerian constitution. He and his cronies have brought the country to its knees. The people are suffering. Personally, I am going to swim across the Mediterranean if he does not die soon enough. More importantly, do not censor me!
