Algeria's Bouteflika seeks constitutional amendment; move would allow third term
2008-10-30
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced on Wednesday (October 29th) that he would seek a constitutional amendment removing limitations to presidential terms, local and international press reported. Speaking to top judges at the opening of the judicial year, Bouteflika, 71, said he will ask parliament to approve the changes which, in his words, would give Algerians the right to choose their leaders. According to the president, his proposals would provide "stability, efficiency and continuity" in the country. If approved, the constitutional amendments would allow him to run for a third term in office.
Amendments also include a provision promoting women's political rights and their participation in state institutions, Echorouk added.

Al Qadhafi has previously said that the Arabic translation of the world democracy is; always in seats. Democracy makes progress even in the least developed countries. In America, we witness a real revolution bigger than the liberation of a race which was enslaved. One of its symbols is on its way to reach the highest rank in the world supported by the votes of the electors and not constitutional manipulations under the cover of reform. The word reform (Taadil) is derived from justice (Adl). But it is not justice to marginalize millions of people to satisfy the interests of a group of people who starve for power and practice of influence. At a time when former slaves take huge steps towards freedom, a nation who took its independence from colonization moves slowly towards a new kind of slavery.
