Moussa Touati, leader of the Algerian National Front (FNA) party, announced over the weekend that he will participate in the 2009 presidential election, Algerian press reported on Saturday (August 23rd). The statement was made at the second regular session of the party's National Council, held from Thursday to Saturday in Tipaza. Algerian press welcomed the move, with Liberté saying on Sunday (Augst 24th) "Today, the political class must emerge from the hibernation which has frozen it." The FNA has risen up the political ladder, winning 1.6% of the popular vote and eight parliamentary seats in 1992, and 11.29% of the vote and 13 seats in 2007.
