Algerians note al-Qaeda ignorance of their nation's history
2009-06-26
A recent video by al-Qaeda spokesman Abu Yahya al-Libi prompted many Algerian analysts to reject the terrorist group's manipulation of Algerian history.
By Nazim Fethi for Magharebia in Algiers – 26/06/09
![]() [Getty Images] Algerians criticised al-Qaeda for confusing terrorists with those who fought for Algerian independence. |
An al-Qaeda video released earlier this week urging Maghreb citizens to support the terrorist organisation provoked a negative reaction in Algeria. To analysts, the video reflects a desperate effort by al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb leader Abdelmalek Droukdel to link his struggling group to al-Qaeda's international organisation.
In a video entitled "Algeria Between the Sacrifice of Fathers and Faithfulness of Sons", al-Qaeda spokesman Mohamed Hassan Kaid, alias Abu Yahya al-Libi (the Libyan), called on Muslims to wage "jihad" against Algerian military and government targets. He also made a recruiting call to the broader Maghreb population to join his cause.
The message provoked a wave of criticism in Algeria, particularly because it perpetuates confusion between al-Qaeda's "Mujahideen" and the Algerian Mujahideen who fought for Algerian independence.
The editor of the daily newspaper El Fadjr said the video explains "why al-Qaeda is so desperate to win Algeria". Al-Qaeda "almost managed to realise its objective of founding an Islamic state, but people's reactions stood in its way," he stated. The organisation's determination is a form of "revenge" against Algeria, "which thwarted al-Qaeda's plans".
Daily paper Le Soir d'Algérie, meanwhile, wrote that al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb tried to draw parallels between the "chouhadas" – the martyrs in the revolution for independence - and the terrorists from the Salafist group.
The paper emphasised al-Libi's poor knowledge of Algerian history, as he had stated that "Algeria had a million martyrs", when in reality the figure was more like one and a half million.
A former Mujahid who fought in the Algerian war of independence remarked to Magharebia that it was the original Mujahideen who defeated terrorism when it appeared in Algeria. "The first self-defence groups, the "patriots", were started up by former Mujahideen such as Haj Al-Makhfi in Lakhdaria, or Al-Haj Zitoufi in Ain-Defla, or Colonel Amirouche's son, Noureddine Ait-Hammouda, in Kabylia," he said.
"As long as we live and the terrorist threat exists, we shall continue to fight them," the former mujahid added.
Al-Qaeda's media appearance is mostly aimed at legitimising Droukdel's command, at a time his organisation is experiencing some serious disagreements, added Le Soir d'Algérie. This kind of "blessing" from al-Qaeda's Osama Bin Laden and Ayman Al-Zawahiri is a lifeline for Droukdel's organisation, and a way of masking the innumerable losses it has suffered in recent times.
Meanwhile, Algerian authorities vowed to continue the fight against terrorism. Speaking during the graduation ceremony of three classes of National Gendarmerie officers on Wednesday (June 24th), General Ahmed Boustila during the graduation ceremony of three classes of National Gendarmerie officers that "the fight against the terrorists will continue."
Referring to last week's attack in which AQIM killed 18 gendarmes in Bordj Bou Arreridj, General Boustila said, "This massacre will not discourage the gendarmes or alter their determination to fight terrorism as a top priority, until it is completely eradicated."
"The Salafist group is experiencing a difficult situation internally, but is still capable of doing harm. That's why we have to remain vigilant and step up our information-gathering activities."

Who will protect weak sons of the people in face of all these thieves, dogs, plunderers of the money of the people and new callers for savagery who rule, abuse and corrupt on earth? Oh Lord appoint someone to protect our dignity and pride. Amen.

I wish this article addressed the strategic location of the recent past attacks... they are all away from the capitol. Perhaps some research and quotes from sources (authorities) can elucidate the concern noted.
ZERGUINE YASMINA Posted 2009-06-27
I think the people making these attacks are cowards. Corruption has led to poverty, and poverty to fanaticism! Personally, I am a believer, but my Islam is one of tolerance and respect of all walks of people. Stay strong! -Kisses from Lyon, France
Promachos Posted 2009-07-03
Isn't it ironic that Algerians fought long and hard for their independance from France only to....end up living there (and in Britian). Algerians love Algeria so much they are dying to get to French shores!!!! Why didn't you people just stay part of France? Stupid. Absolutely Stupid.
وردة الجزائر Posted 2009-07-04
Why do we destroy our country? Why are we behind every catastrophe in Algeria? When will the minds of people wake up and know we have gone backward? We destroy and build. This is an irony against every Algerian. Your country is your second mother. Would you accept any harm against your mother?
chakib Posted 2009-07-06
May God guide you, this is Algeria you are destroying. Is this how you express your manhood?

Ijust want to ask those who name themelves alquaida what that they may feel when they kill their others? If they are praising Islam as they allege any one would tell them to go fight where it should. there are the esraelis, and others who need to be fought.
MouradNY Posted 2009-07-09
Reply to Promachos : your comment shows how ignorant you are about Algeria history or colonialism. You must be very young and know nothing about colonialism: how will you react if someone shows up at your house door to rape and then kill all your family? This is one picture among other hundreds darker pictures of colonialism..just see what happen to Palestinians to day where any human dignity is taken away from them. Forget about jail, torture and inhuman actions committed daily against a nation ?? is this what you asking?? With all the problems faced in Algeria, all Algerian, men or women are very proud of Algeria Independence. As to its government policy, that's a different matter and of course many of us do not agree since we think that Algeria had suffered enough and its people need a better life and leaders.
hocine Posted 2009-07-11
Yes efforts must be joined to eliminate terrorism.
BMF Posted 2009-07-13
The Algerian generals' ignorance about the Algerian people is far more manifest. The Algerian people are and have always been in favour of a union of all the people of the region and of all the Arab and Muslim people. If the Algerian people were free to express their thoughts, they would cry load and clear that they are absolutely against the "Algerian" generals' suicidal politics, who push to split apart the peoples of the Maghreb and encourage the "Sahrawi" separatist to create terrorist centres in Tindouf and to try to separate from their homeland, Morocco. These suicidal policies risk giving ideas to the Algerian Sahrawis, who would also like to create their own country in southern Algeria. Their sprinkler's water has somehow carried upwind. What a shame for the Maghreb and its people. What if the generals were to become wiser and more... Maghreb???
وجدي Posted 2009-07-19
You are royal Moroccan intelligence. You address media poison to our great Moujahid people, the masters of the Arab Maghreb.
Ayman Posted 2009-07-20
You ought not complain about terrorism when you practice it against your neighbours.
lahcene1 Posted 2009-07-24
I would just like to say to Yahia el Liby that he should start by cleaning out his mouth before making fatwas against my country, Algeria!

simo Posted 2009-07-29
If this is the case, then it is the generals who are doing their all so that al-Qaeda and the other terrorist groups can continue to survive or even grow stronger. And this comes in order that the "Algerian" generals can continue to justify their abuse and their privileges and their limitless gains in wealth. The Polisario staging is repeating shamelessly. They are creating imaginary movements and, consequently, are creating exceptional opportunities for themselves. Well of course, they are in a time of crisis so they are creating fear and a false situation of extreme danger. This is a free ticket to arm themselves with foreign weapons, making billion dollar orders for them while embezzling aid that was originally destined to the refugees or - not that that is important - fake refugees. The "Algerian leaders'" source of embezzlement and of getting rich will remain guaranteed. "Interests of Algeria", you say!? What Algeria??? Perhaps it exists in speeches, but not at all in reality. Poor Algeria! Poor Maghreb!
un Algérien Posted 2009-07-30
In response to BFM- Given your text, it seems that you are a Moroccan and that you have a poor understanding of the policies your leaders have been managing since 1960. In 1960, when France gave Mauritania independence, Morocco's first gesture was not to offer its congratulations, but to declare war and declare that Mauritania was an integral part of the Kingdom. In 1960, when Algeria took hold of its independence after seven and a half years of war and all the death, suffering, martyrs and disabled people that come with it, Morocco's first act was to claim loud and clear that its border with Algeria was at Oued Zeboudj in the wilaya of Ain Defla, i.e., half of Algeria's territory. In 1975, when Spain packed its bags and weapons and left the Western Sahara, the Kingdom of Morocco hastened to invade this country under the pretext that it too was part of the Kingdom, as were the enclaves of CEUTA and MELILLA! Why close your eyes to or make quiet complaints about Spain when you accuse Algeria and its generals of all the evils throughout the Maghreb. May everyone minds their own business and give up on expansionist politics so that peace may establish itself.
rachh Posted 2009-08-01
The true terrorists are our schools. They are what are anesthetizing our children. Westerners have understood that science is the guarantor of a radiant future, but the Arabs cling to their surats and nothing else. To this regard, they cannot develop and things will go from bad to worse to the benefit of those who are governing them. Abraham Lincoln said, “Before you free the body, let us free the mind.”
mourad Posted 2009-08-02
Why doesn’t this al-Libi declare his so-called “jihad” on the Libyan army? I pray to God day and night that he falls wounded to the hands of our Algerian soldiers, and then we can see how he responds! To Hell with the Khawariji!
Un marocain Posted 2009-08-02
Border problems in the Maghreb are an undeniable reality. They arose from French and Spanish colonialism. When an Algerian speaks about Morocco's desire to annex half of Algeria, this points directly back to the Algerian military's pure propaganda. But, if we were to refer to the irrefutable, internationally recognised historical documents, there are a lot of things to be said on this subject. Algeria is benefiting from the fact that it is the colonial powers' fait accompli, and there will come an opportune time when Algeria and France will have to face up to the prevailing historical truth. Algeria's Machiavellian tendencies are now known by everyone. Algeria knows perfectly well that French and Spanish colonialism robbed us of our lands. After independence, the Algerian leaders have been trying to rule the region of North Africa and bring it under its domain. But, their rule was rejected by Morocco, a thousand-year-old state with the identity, culture and traditions of Berbers, Jews and Arabs. No state will rob us of this in order to dictate to us the sort of life that corresponds to its aims for domination. The Polisario, an Algerian fabrication, marches under the orders of the Algerian military forces in order to try to destabilise Morocco, which is economically and politically more promising than its neighbour in the East. As for the issue with Ceuta and Melilla and the surrounding islands, Algerians ought to know that Moroccans are no shy with their claims to them, but still believe in the principles of dialogue, non-violence and neighbourliness. War by surprise is the rule of the weak, no matter their strength. Regarding Spain, a country most certainly stronger than the entire Arab world united, Morocco is acting as it must and without taking any lessons from Algeria!
Farid Posted 2009-08-04
In response to "un Marocain"- Since you say that Morocco's intention to annex part of Algeria is nothing but the Algerian military's pure propaganda, I will point you to the last book written by the late Abdelatif Fillali, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Moroccan Prime Minister. You do not know what is going on even in your own country. Since you say Morocco holds more promise than Algeria economically, I tell you that Algeria's GDP is double that of your country. These numbers are written in black and white on your screen! Yet, your country was not colonised for centuries like Algeria, so where are the results of this? Algeria is number 11 in reserves worldwide and has a regulation fund of $40 billion. Who can say any different? Algeria is simply being halted by terrorism, which can affect any country in the world. And, since you speak about the Algerian generals, that itself is pure propaganda. If through your eyes you consider Algeria and poor and without resources, then why do your government and your king not cease in asking for the border to be opened? Algeria is not demanding this. Stop accusing Algeria of your evils; it simply wants peace. As for the Western Sahara, the UN has taken this on. We do not want the institution of the AMU. May each country mind its own problems. We understand one thing from this: the Moroccans hate the Algerians, and for the Algerians this is all the better. We do not want you to change your point of view, as we respect your opinion. So, respect ours and let everyone stay put. As for Algeria and France, this is a problem between two sovereign countries. The French stayed in Algeria for 132 years. The Algerians feel more open to France than the people of the Maghreb.
maroquimesquinejepleuretoujours Posted 2009-08-05
Go search your territories. Our generals are waiting for you. All the same, be sure to ask for your French-Zionist and Saudi masters’ blessing. You never know if the Algerian ogre will eat you.
ابروح طنجة Posted 2009-08-05
My brothers, if the democratic process was genuine in Maghreb countries, terrorism and accusations of infidelity by extremists wouldn't have risen. We need openness and social dialog more than tough laws sometimes and which abuse of the rights of some innocents. Where is this judiciary integrity in the case of Belliraj for example if evidence isn't shown? Real reconciliation and recognizing justice for everyone, brotherhood between people. I weep blood for our political rupture with our brothers in Algeria. Now fake Chinese products are invading us even if they have killed thousands of Uighur Muslims and they are still following the way of ethnic cleansing against them. I tell them peace to institute justice and peace on earth.
ABOROH Posted 2009-08-05

As Enrico said so well, "Friendship between our peoples is so precious. It is like a plant, whose seed must be sown, watered and fertilised." What would be more pleasant than to see the whole Maghreb united, its population living in peace and calm and re-establishing their free movement. Let us be brothers and build this beautiful Maghreb for ourselves and for our future generations. May God bless all the Maghreb people!!!

It is truly unfortunate to see brothers tear each other apart and hate each other. This is the doing of the leaders of this poor Maghreb, whose sole care is preserving their own interests. They do not give a care about a united Maghreb. We Algerians and Moroccans are brother peoples. We want to bring change to Algeria, a country that paid a heavy price with the "Black Decade", which is being continued with the alleged "al-Qaeda". The day will come where all the peoples, be they from Morocco, Algeria or Tunisia, will understand that the Maghreb is formed of one sole people with the same culture. Strength only comes through union - just take the example of the European Union.

Response To Farid Posted 2009-08-23
If your country has 40$ billion in reserves, good for you. How come then Morocco which has no oil, no reserves because of no oil has a much better life than Algeria? and is much more beautiful, people are also nicer. Algerians I noticed are usually rude when i met them.
محمد جيجل Posted 2009-08-24
Terrorism doesn’t exist only in Algeria but in all countries of the world. Algeria is capable of solving its problems alone without help of other countries.
LAMINE DZ Posted 2009-08-25
In response to "Moroccan": I tell you that everyone knows that the Moroccans want to go against Algeria, but the problem is that they do not have to means to do it. Algeria is the most complete of all the Arab countries, having oil, surface area, people and, not to be forgotten, an army. So, you do not have the means to go against us. You are far behind us. One more thing: as we say here, "Compete without jealousy."

Salam everyone- During this blessed month of Ramadan, I must simply say that it is sad to read comments where hatred for others is present. This is part of the game of not just a few countries that are afraid that the Muslims will unite and represent a political and economic force in Africa and elsewhere and will be on good terms with and respect different religions and so on. Let us leave it to the national and international bodies to settle the problems and disputes that may come up. Let us use our strength against the enemies of a tolerant Islam, where power and coercion have no place being. Who here on this website is able to come to terms with or punish the government of any belligerent country? This is not a utopia. Sometimes the best armies in the world are put to the trenches by fighters who have faith in their actions. Indochina and Cuba did not kneel down, and neither did certain countries in the Americas and Africa. Likewise for Algeria with its million and a half deaths and its disappearances. There are so many that I cannot list them here. History has made a chapter for them all their own. In order to leave the door wide open for other comments on other subject, I remember that there was an organisation created by Israeli and Palestinian mothers, who met to mourn their innocent children who died tragically. This organisation often returns to my thoughts: it is a shame that death is what brings us together. I ask that you indulge my comment, as I plead for peace. Aggressiveness never pays off.

djazairi hor Posted 2009-08-29
Terrorism in Algeria has failed, suffered a bloody defeat, for the simple reason that it aims to bring the Algerian nation to its knees. An entire generation sacrificed itself for the independence of this country. There remains for us to do one thing: take each other by the hand and all of us unite to fight the diseases that are terrorism and fanaticism. The ideologies behind these are not difficult or even a challenge. This is about changing our mentalities, particularly at the uppermost portion of the state, which is suffering from gangrene from corruption, patronage networking and regionalism. The people have suffered so much, but they have not been fooled. To your pens, workers, intellectuals, journalists, and media men! The unions too have a role to play. The politics have disappointed us! They are stubborn!
rachid Posted 2009-08-29
What I am reading on this website is unbelievable: there are Muslims squabbling over who is better than whom. This is all manipulation and we are all falling into the trap. The real problem is that some people are stuffing their pockets and having a good laugh while leaving us to our stupidity.

My greetings to all free-thinkers and peace-lovers in the Grand Maghreb. I read the previous posts and I have to admit that I am very dissapointed at how Maghrebis are manipulated by the propaganda in their respective countries and their tendencies to generalize. The Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, or Libyan regimes are no angels. They have done more harm than good to their people, so how can we blame the people for their leaders' shortcomings? I read Moroccans and Algerians pointing fingers at each other and exchanging accusation when both are victims of those they r defending. Did they forget that they are one of the culturally closest people in the world? Same dialect, same Mad-hab (Maliki), even the same Quran Reading (Warsh)!!! How many Algerians have Moroccan last names, such as Marrakshi? How many Moroccans have Algerian family names such as Tlemceni? The other day I was looking at the Moroccan-Algerian border near the Mediterranean and I discovered that the border is marked by a small creek (oued) named "KISS", not KILL. Ramdan Mubarek to all Maghrebis, except their *&^%$ leaders of course.

The Algerians are eating meat even if it is expensive. This is not the case in the other countries of the Maghreb - I travelled them.

Without wanting to offend anyone, I went to Morocco and Tunisia and these countries are made for tourists, not for natives. The souvenir shops, restaurants and stores are all owned by Europeans, and only the employees are from the country. This is why the prices are standard to that of the euro and yet employees are paid the 150 euro minimum wage. They want to make us pay prices like in Europe, which shows you that the reins are in the Europeans hands. The people of the country receive the base pay and nothing more, no value added to the countries' wealth. That is why Algeria remains the Algerians'. And, it is even better that the tourism comes from the Algerians by the Algerians. There is one sour note, though: the Chinese are invading the country. I am not against workers building up the country, but I am against those who move in and sell **** to the detriments of the traders who have trouble making ends meet. Be more entrepreneurial. Let us defend our values and our history.

As-Salaamu ailaikum We are all MUSLIMs and neither our nationality nor our ethnicity Arab, Not Arab, Black, White)are important. What is important is that we increase our Iman, Taqwah and love for each other. The Quran and Hadith has provided us with sufficient warnings of who the enemy is and whether they use colonialism, capatilism, zionism or any tool at their disposal, their only aim is to DIVIDE and RULE the muslims. They impart their political and social system on us and has that been successful. NO, look at all you countries, most all of are our poltical leaders are slaves to the west. How many of our mothers, sisters, brothers and fathers are serving them and only a few political leaders and their friends are enriched. Based on the oil Allah has blessed the region the level of living is poor. OUR MOTHERS AND FATHERS are slaves to enrich the people of the West. Who created the borders to our lands, not us, accords by the western powers We have solutions and I promise by the oath of Allah (the greatest) follow and hold dear the Sunnah and the Quraan. Educate ourselves both Islamically and in the Sciences of this world. Practice a balanced life and this world is temporary. We are travellers so we must prepare for our final destination, but in that process we must ACT as ONE UNITED UMMAH irrespective of colour, ethnicity, country etc. Remember the muslim Ummah is one body and if one part is afflicted the entire body feels the pain. WE ARE BLESSED THAT ALLAH HAS CHOSEN US TO BE MUSLIM

I have read all comments and they are not relevant to the main topic. But I want to show to those who don't have a good knowledge of modern and old Morocco even if it is said that the new has newness but don't neglect the past. Modern Morocco is the first which recognized the most powerful country in the World, America. This shows that Morocco has always extended its hands to people and nations in order to achieve unity, development and build their glories. It has always fought colonization in all parts of the globe. Wars in which Morocco had participated in the first lines reflect this: liberation of all African states without condition or limitation, liberation of Europe, liberation of Asia (Vietnam and China), support of Egypt, Syria...South Africa with money and human resources. Therefore, Morocco was and is still offering everything it has for the progress of nations and its treasuries are never depleted thanks to God. But unfortunately, these nations and peoples have begun to forget the good action of Morocco. Now they are making conspiracies against it especially our neighbour in Arabism and Islam which contributes to the process of “divide and conquer”. You should know my dear brothers that the dignity of Morocco will dignify you and the humiliation of Morocco will humiliate you. With your unity, nations will respect you. But with your division, you will become weaker and more humiliated. Therefore, colonizing nations will be interested in you. So stop floundering, stop division, stop following orders coming from the stupid west which thinks we are idiots and unaware of its hatred to us for our Arabism, Islam, resources, nature, air, health, hospitality, complementarity, solidarity, respect of the elders to the youth and respect of the youth to the elders, our growing population, our youth, seas, rivers, deserts, mountains, plains which are still lively, prosperous, our traditions, holidays and customs...For all this, we must forget hatreds, forget plots between us and think deeply about our unity, loyalty to our people, distribute these resources among us, live in prosperity and love for each other. My brothers, these words I am saying should be a preamble to re-unite us and be a plan for officials to adopt it as a road map to reform what was lost. A right sought by a claimant is never lost. Where are we from nations which want to achieve union after hundreds of wars between them?
moha30 Posted 2009-09-06
Hi- All of the people discussing these subjects are far removed from them, yet, because of being in this situation far removed from Truth, they believe that they hold a legitimate standing so as to discuss what the experts in the field still have not managed to find a solution to. Any way you look at it, we should let our leaders - assisted by our representatives - plot the future for our future generations. Talking in a vacuum absolutely does not lead to anything. Mind what you see and leave these problems to those who are holding the reins.

Algeria which had defeated the strongest power in the world (France) which was supported at the time by NATO, is capable, with the will of God, to face this fascist junta which no longer distinguishes between the good and bad. I think that the reason for which we haven't eradicated this group is the absence of cooperation of our brothers with us. Unfortunately, some investigations have shown that support and camouflage by our neighbours have delayed eradication of this scourge in Algeria to maintain instability and current crisis. Terrorist hideouts scattered here and there might prosper in some other countries. I stress that if our neighbours were to experience the same terrorist crisis as Algeria, it would have been their end and they would never recover from it. Our brothers in Morocco should have supported us, not let terrorist cells progress there and export to us their diseases. Algeria today deploys thousands of border guards just to fight drug smuggling. Is there anything worse than drug smuggling?
paixamourfraternite Posted 2009-09-08
The profound evil that is eating away at our region, North Africa, is most certainly the ideology of Islam - religion and states - from which is born the mysterious al-Qaeda and from which issue all of the fatwas calling for the death of (jihad against) all those who differ from their content. In order to free North Africa, let us first rid ourselves of the word "Arab" so as to shorten the "Arab Maghreb". Let us be the pure children of our homeland, the sacred land we inherited from our Berber ancestors. Then, let us make use of ourselves by freeing ourselves from the exploitation of these bad leaders, the kings with and without crowns, who want to reign over all of us for all eternity. Long live the people of North Africa and long live a Republic of North Africa, for the reunification of our homeland. Come on, children of the homeland! The day of glory is ours! It is for our tomorrow! Take the oath to (re)build our homeland so we can live here in perfect harmony, freely and democratically.

We are just happy for our prosperity. I ask the Algerian community abroad not to damage the image of Algerians please. I heard false statements about the president, unbelievable even if you swear. You have made eastern channels make more fun of us because of those who try unfortunately to stir strife between the government and people. So please be united and love each other.

The painful truth which many try to hide under national flags and other false slogans is that Algeria has not yet taken its independence. The Algerian people are still colonized by the lackeys of France. As soon as it left, it appointed its lackeys and servicemen who speak its language and think its way. The idea that Algeria is a free and independent country is one of the biggest mistakes. Algeria is still under the grip of colonization. If the Algerian people used to work during the era of colonization as farmers for a fifth of crops, today in the period of agents of the colonizer they don't find a job for a seventh or an eighth of the crop. Moreover, the so-called Al Qaeda is just an aberrant category which is corrupting on earth. The survival of this aberrant group was extended as a result of the corruption of the regime and marginalization of society. It is very probable that this regime plays an important role in supporting these criminal networks so that they will live in confusion, instability, do whatever they want and plunder resources of these people. This is the truth whether you like it or not.

The idea that there are Algerians and Moroccans is a pure invention. Is there really a difference in the language and cultures of these people? The manifest hatred here is a hatred of a people for its own image and its own history. Such controversy should help resolve the Moroccan-Algerian conflict. Inciting hatred is truly stupid, especially among the members of a single people. The border is fictional; the people must claim the right to free movement.

It is clear that these terrorists and their sponsors do not know the history of Algeria or the Maghreb. The Maghreb people took a loss of six million martyrs just for Algeria in their fight against French colonialism between 1830 and 1962. North Africa is the land of free men - never forget it!

Thank you, Magharebia, for having permitted this dialogue between the people of the Maghreb. Expressing our commitment to faith while denigrating our neighbouring countries and our own leaders will unfortunately not lead us very far toward the prosperity our peoples are searching for! The "Non-Maghreb" is, according to certain estimates, costing us 3% of our GDP. This means fewer roads, fewer hospitals, fewer schools, fewer airports, fewer railroads and so on. It also means fewer investment opportunities, less creation of wealth, less scientific and technologic co-operation, less competitiveness for our countries on the global level and, finally and most importantly, less political weight on the global scene. In other words, instead of being masters of our own destinies, we are content in carrying out decisions that were made elsewhere and that are surely not to our advantage! And, yet, how many things unite us??? Let us think about it. Sometimes I take business trips with a delegation from various Arab countries and the co-operation between my Algerian and Moroccan colleagues has made me feel more Maghreb than ever before. I must say that I am truly proud of this and that I am convinced without a doubt that a United Maghreb will come about in a generation at most.

You shouldn't complain of terrorism while you practise it against your neighbours.

Who could forget the massacres committed by these dirty bearded people throughout an entire decade? The images of children and women and the elderly and honest father of families will never be erased from our memories. They are looking at all costs to seize power to get richer. The proof is there: these criminals, still with their beards, are currently working in trade with the money they took from their victims. This is not the Muslims' war; we are fighting these cowards so that our dear Algeria may live on!

I am against underdevelopment, against terrorists, against corrupt governments, against the times we are now in. I am for knowledge and nothing but knowledge.

After reading some of these comments I have deduced that those who criticise their country from behind their screens are the same ones who know nothing about the Algerians and have not experienced what we experienced in claiming our independence at, as you know, a heavy cost. Those who criticise Algeria are – to tell the truth – people incapable of speaking intellectually. What they have written has only permitted them to unmask part of their inferiority complex, their profound ignorance and their will to excel on the back of a country that gave the best ever lesson in bravery during its war for liberation from 1954 to 1962. Pose a question about geography or history to those who dare to insult my country and you will – you can be certain of this – get a real image of those who would blow up their own torso just to please those why want only bad for us and who, to this day, have quite poorly managed the freedoms and dignity we have recovered. It is believable that these misguided children are the subjects of those who sold their soul and their dignity to colonialism while our brothers and sisters held high the white and green of free Algeria and fought for it. I think that these misguided people need to ask some questions about the history of Algeria and understand the misfortunes of the war for liberation, led with such dignity by the FLN and ALN. If they did, then never – never ever – would the use such language. A proverb from this country of a million and a half martyrs goes: “A container is only worth its contents.”

Before anyone talks about Algeria, he must know his real size. Algeria is great in all ages. Despite the long period of occupation, it has achieved so much progress. Who is this one who talks about Algeria? And you Moroccan, study the history of my country first then you can talk. By God, replying to you is an insult to Algeria.

No religion, no savage terrorism in Algeria. Thank you.

All this reflects the greatness of the Algerian people.

Is it possible to compare these extremist terrorists who look like (unclear) with their beards to Moujahids and our faithful martyrs the martyrs of the glorious November revolution? By God, what they say is a shame. I say to these terrorists in Algeria who fight in the name of religion to get to the seat of power to clean up one hundred times, go to the whorehouses to take out your sisters and wives, because you've been gone in the mountains a long time; you know well the duty of a husband towards his wife. You should return your depraved sisters to the right path before taking back the whole nation, as you claim. Long live Algeria. Eternity and glory to our faithful martyrs.

If we watch the news channels, whether 1 or 8, it seems that all problems are present in the political arena and that terrorism has reached a record in terms of crimes, after Israel especially, because most crimes are committed in their country. I am surprised at the presence of creatures in our universe called terrorists, even if they are Muslims, who grew up in mosques, but since then, many countries have been closed to them. And if they are real Moujahids, let them open to them again.
