Algerian students take baccalaureate exams

2007-06-15

Approximately 700,000 pupils across Algeria have been sitting their Baccalaureate examinations since June 9th. According to forecasts from Education Minister Boubekeur Benbouzid, 70% of students are expected to pass.

The national education ministry has set its sights on a baccalaureate (bac) pass rate of more than 70% nationwide for the approximately 700,000 pupils sitting for the exam this year. Boubekeur Benbouzid, Minister of National Education, said that he hopes the high pass rate will demonstrate the results of "efforts made to reform the education system".

Speaking as the envelope containing the first Arab literature examination was opened at the Mohamed Boudiaf high school in Dar El-Beida on June 9th, Benbouzid added that the bac examination in Algeria is "the toughest in the world, and its results are the best, because our aim is to have an effective, top-performing education system which offers pupils high-quality training so that they can be best prepared for their specialised higher education".

Many pupils sitting for the bac are candidates at large, or those that have failed the test in the past. These pupils are no longer affiliated with a school and so they must demand a seat at the exams on an independent basis. Candidates at large represent 37.6% of test-takers this year, an increase of 80% compared with last year. Benbouzid felt the increasing number of candidates at large was positive, showing "the importance accorded by Algerian society to education and training".

The minister also expressed his satisfaction at the number of girls taking the examinations, which has risen to 58.01%, another aspect which shows that the Algerian educational system "does not marginalise girls, and rather it is boys who are more likely to drop out of the school system."

Many candidates for the bac were surprised by the difficulty of the exam although opinions vary according to subject and series.

Dalila Zaichi, a girl taking the bac at Omar-Racim High School, spoke with Magharebia after her mathematics examination. She felt she "hardly knew where to start", something which worries her, given that this is an essential subject to the career in natural and life sciences she plans to pursue.

But Zaichi does not feel discouraged, She firmly beleives that she will catch up in the following tests. "I can’t miss the bus now, after all the work I’ve put in over the year," she said.

At the Pasteur examination centre in the city centre the scene was similar. Groups of pupils sat around, holding text and exercise books, preparing for the afternoon session.

Omar, sitting apart, in front of the entrance, immersed in a thick history textbook, said that "up until now, all the examination subjects have been manageable." Omar is sitting his bac as a candidate at large in the human sciences branch for the third time, and he stressed the importance of being "really determined" to come through all sorts of tests in life, not just those encountered at school. For him, "a diploma is like a certificate for existing."

The anguish and stress of the examinations do not only haunt students. Some parents outside the schools revealed their own difficulties. Linda Nasra, the mother of one test-taker, expressed her worries, "particularly the fear of failure, which started well before the Baccalaureate exams".

"I don’t show my anguish, but it’s boiling away inside me," said Nasra.

Candidates for the Arab Literature baccalaureate examinations stressed the complexity of the topics for the Arab language paper on the first day of this decisive examination.

At Frères Hamia High School in Kouba, A. Walid, a candidate in the literature and human sciences section, said that he had not expected to come across such complex questions. "We were pretty certain that the topics would concentrate on poetry, and that is why we concentrated our efforts for the whole year on this kind of literature. So we were very surprised when we found the opposite," he declared.

The government took steps to reduce the amount of cheating on the exam, namely by forbidding the use of mobile phones in the testing centres. Nonetheless, testing was marred when a number of students in Khenchela attacked their proctors for preventing them from cheating on the exams. One bac candidate slapped a teacher in the face, causing her to faint from shock.

The results of the bac examinations will be announced in early July.

The baccalaureate exams were difficult this year and the newspapers were with the students- that's why I thank you. And I wish success to all the students.

nassima Posted 2007-06-18

Okay, to put it in words, above all I wish everyone success in their lives. I want to thank you for giving me the chance to say good luck, stay strong and keep up the good work.

I'm one of the candidates who sat for the examinations. The exam was easy for the modern literature series, I liked the philosophy subject which was very easy, thanks to the Ministry of national education, thanks to all those who contributed to this exam and its preparation, salam alaikoum. Your sister Hind from Tetouan, high school Cherif Al Idrissi.

Salam alaikoum dear friends- the baccalaureate exam this year wasn't potatoes, but those who don't pass have to sell potatoes. This is what I heard from some people who sat for the exam this year, and I agree with them. Thank you.

jawad Posted 2007-06-20

May God curse this system

hanane Posted 2007-06-22

Salam alaikoum, the Algerian minister of education said that the Algerian baccalaureate is one of the most difficult in the world. This poor man should come to Morocco and see the true difficulty. I hope that he won't be shocked to see at the least the exam of natural sciences. The difficulty of the Algerian baccalaureate doesn't represent even 1% of the difficulty of the Moroccan baccalaureate. Hanane from Morocco.

جهاد نبيل Posted 2007-06-23

I think if this frustrating system continues, no one will pass, crimes and corruption will spread widely in the country, namely one because no one is enthusiastic about passing and education, just immigration.

ندى NaDa Posted 2007-06-24

First of all, I would like to warmly greet everyone who sit for the baccalaureate exams this year with my wishes of success and as our prophet, peace and prayer upon him, has said 'Be optimistic and you'll find the good'. And inchallah you'll pass.

مو سى Posted 2007-06-26

The minister of education says that the Algerian Baccalaureate is more difficult and forgot that it isn't accepted in European universities only after taking an exam. After the baccalaureate, university after university, then unemployment for ever........?

جيهان Posted 2007-06-30

For me I think that education or exams in general are difficult only for those who are lazy and don't study and want to pass by laziness. If you're hard-working you'll pass. The baccalaureate this year was up to the level. Thank you.

Salam alaikoum, to the sister who says that the Moroccan baccalaureate is more difficult than the Algerian, and the brother who pretends that the Algerian diploma isn't approved, I say to the brothers, just go back to previous years and compare the Algerian level to the Arab level in general (no use, as the Algerian level is much higher) The problem isn't with the general level of the baccalaureate but in the low interests of some corrupt sides that try to keep dependancy on foreign countries. We ask God to guide them and success to all Muslim nation. Algeria

Hi, firstly I send my greetings to everyone who will sit for the baccalaureate exam this year and I wish them success. This diploma is crucial because through it, the candidate's fate is determined either by passing and completing his high school studies or failing and falling in the abyss. We don’t wish this upon our dear sons. Finally I say: God do not waste the reward of those who do good deeds.

The Moroccan baccalaureate is the easiest baccalaureate and it is not recognized by the UNICEF. The Algerian Baccalaureate is the most difficult baccalaureate. And if you dare, try. Algeria is famous for its scientists. They pretend but don’t prepare. I hope you understand.

عبد الرحيم بو طرباقة الزين Posted 2008-03-14

I study in the experimental sciences branch. I want to say that the Moroccan baccalaureate is one of weakest. But the Algerian bac is acknowledged as including international subjects. This is a comment in reply to Abdeljalil.

لعلى علي Posted 2008-03-16

Education and teaching in Algeria are well, the reform project is important, interesting and covers the knowledge and competences of the world. The Algerian State has significant amounts of money to insure free education, which it alone can do. It also works on ensuring different modern equipment as well as building pioneering educational institutes. There is no way to compare the country of a million and half a million martyrs to the neighbouring states. The baccalaureate of Algeria is in a good condition and there are Algerian competent powers, there should just be more interest, financially, shown to the teachers. Long live Algeria free and pioneer among the countries. Triumph and victory to our faithful martyrs.

Okay, I wish everyone good luck! I tell you that the most difficult baccalaureate exam is Morocco’s. Moreover, they have interns watch over us so that if you want to cheat, you cannot. The most difficult baccalaureate that exists is the Moroccan one. They are looking for Moroccan baccalaureate graduates abroad, because they got their baccalaureate with hard work. It is the most demanding baccalaureate. Quite the opposite of the Algerian one: they pass just by cheating or with little papers. It is a bunch of crap, but no, I wish everyone good luck on the 2008 baccalaureate.

God be with us and curse this system. You implemented a system that is a bit difficult for us. We are not used this. But, I swear to you that with all the sacrifices we have made—no vacations, no weekends, no going out, nothing—that we do not want to fail this. Moreover, the professors are stressing us out even more when they say that this year should be easy, but that we should not trust the academy. Well, please, please, give us a way that we can succeed. Question, my friends: is it normal that I got an 8 for the past two trimesters with all the work I did? Please, console me. Big up. A suggestion for you: take only the most important subjects in each field of study, and take bac on those. All the subjects like H, G, philo, math. Foreign language is useless, I swear. Ciaooooo.

You should not be afraid of taking the baccalaureate exams this year, my friends, because those who did not get the old bac did not get anything. Don't worry, God willing, it will be very easy this year because Minister Benbouzid should recognise that this year was the most difficult year that he has known in his life. We are the first and last losers, especially given what could happen. God willing, he will recognise this and make the necessary corrections. I beg him to be cool with us.

I sat for the baccalaureate last year. God is almighty, I wasn’t able to make it because of the lack of confidence and concern. But this year, with the will of God, I am quite ready to take the baccalaureate with a good grade. Self-confidence is very important.

nouna sidi bel abbes Posted 2008-05-11

I want the topics for baccalaureate candidates according to the new programme. Oh Lord grant success to everyone, especially with the will of God!!!

anna Posted 2008-05-11

We want to help free candidates in literary branches and Islamic sciences as well as those who sat for the exam for over six times.

DACHER- Posted 2008-05-13

Salam alikoum. I offer my greetings to all the students and staff of the high school Hachi Abderrahmane in Messad, province of Jelfa…Please correct us this baccalaureate 2008 and offer it to us as a gift Mr Minister, God doesn’t waste the prize of the workers for the good.

sisar Posted 2008-05-13

I will win with the will of God despite the illness and enemies, like an eagle on the high summit.

محمد عبدو Posted 2008-05-13

I am scared about the baccalaureate this year.

رنى Posted 2008-05-14

We need sites that present baccalaureate exam samples as soon as possible.

الحبيب Posted 2008-05-15

Long live Algeria.

ASMA Posted 2008-05-18

This is my second opportunity this year. We'll get it, God willing, oh Lord.

ابراهيم Posted 2008-05-18

Peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you. The courses are easy and we the independent candidates have more concerns and don’t know from where to start. Therefore, we ask the minister and the supervisors to take into consideration old candidates in proofreading. God doesn’t waste any reward for doers of good deeds. With wishes of success to everyone. To end up in the best way, peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you.

TALOUD Posted 2008-05-19

Hello, I got my baccalaureate in the field of languages and natural sciences. I learned that some of my courses were not covered in the exam. Does anybody have any ideas about this subject? Thank you for your response.

مريم Posted 2008-05-19

SARAH Posted 2008-05-26

May God be with us and with everyone who is taking their baccalaureate exams.

الباك شيبني Posted 2008-05-26

The baccalaureate left us nothing. I have been suffering for four years uncle Ben Bouzid, and you make me pass. Those who don’t study well and cheat pass and those who work hard don’t pass.

البسكري Posted 2008-05-26

Forgive our grandfather, eh Moroccans what do you want of us? Are you looking for massive killing as in the sand war? Stop your envy and jealousy. Work for your country and drive away that king who is starving you. Long live the Republic of Western Sahara.

anis Posted 2008-05-26

I am Anis. I want the date on which the results of the baccalaureate 2008 will be presented on the internet.

هناء Posted 2008-05-26

Hey Ben Bouzid, offer the baccalaureate this year as a gift please, to show the success of the programme as we've been told in school. Otherwise Bouteflika will choke you and kill you. Hanaa.

hassan27 Posted 2008-05-27

I want some of the suggested solutions for the baccalaureate session of 2008, suggestions of the baccalaureate 2008, human sciences branch.

lilou Posted 2008-05-28

Hi All, First of all, I would like to wish all the candidates good luck on their baccalaureate exams this year, especially the students from the old programme. And, I would like to say that there is no reason to stress out or panic, because God will reward those who worked hard. So, my friends, do not lose faith, believe in God and, above all else, do not listen to everything others tell you. Every year, when the baccalaureate exams approach, everybody starts gossiping. Do your last studying up like you normally do and, God willing, everything will get better.

خالد Posted 2008-05-28

I am a student in Sharia sciences. Please help me, this is my first year in this branch and I want to succeed. Thank you.

حنان Posted 2008-05-28

Salam alikoum. I am a student in the third year of the secondary education, old programme. Since this is our last chance, we ask your honour to take this into consideration. I wish to all the students of Mohamed Dib success with the will of God. Thank you.

سناء Posted 2008-05-31

Good luck to all the candidates!

اسماء Posted 2008-05-31

The baccalaureate is just an exam like all other exams, there difficult and easy parts. And if you study hard you will pass. By the way, I got the baccalaureate in 2007 in the first time with a grade point average exceeding 13 even if I had repeated the second year of secondary education for health problems. I wish success to all the hard-working students especially the students of Rass El Oued, Framboise 300.

sabrina Posted 2008-05-31

Peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you. Ok I will say something. When I got my baccalaureate degree in natural sciences, the studies were difficult and even with the new reforms and advantages offered by Ben Bouzid by selecting courses, students are never satisfied with anything. They want pre-prepared questions and even then we don’t know whether they will pass or not? Very odd.

narimene Posted 2008-06-01

I hope that we will discuss the subjects of the baccalaureate 2008.

Honestly, I am in the second year in the branch of management and economy. Next year, with the will of God, I will be a candidate to the 2009 baccalaureate. I am very upset. The most important thing is that I wish success to all the candidates this year. I hope the questions will be reasonable for everyone. With wishes of success with the will of God. You must work hard, concentrate, worship God and pray. Salam alikoum.

fariss kayuor Posted 2008-06-02

There are no more studies, just making fun and playing around even the teachers are just receiving the salary for nothing and they worsen things with strikes and there are more holidays than study days. Oh Lord this is enormous. The educational level is deteriorating. This is getting worse in the Arab World. From here terrorist cells will emerge, and even high cost of living. Oh Arab rulers, wake up.

ريان Posted 2008-06-02

I advise you to study and not to listen to any words of discouragement. Trash talk doesn’t matter.

meriem Posted 2008-06-08

Hi Everybody, Can somebody help me with math? Is it true that this subject will be hard?

hind Posted 2008-06-16

Honestly, I tell you that diplomas are now being granted not to the people who deserve them. They have become mere papers taken by the people. And even if you take that diploma but you don’t deserve it because it is based only on cheating. But unfortunately, officials don’t make a stiff control to avoid cheating cases. Thank you.

نور الهدى1 Posted 2008-06-16

Now, even the students between themselves and they don’t agree what have you left for the state. We are all Muslims and brothers. Why is everyone despising the programme of the other. “We blame our time and the blame is in us and the only blame of our time is us”. Those who say that Moroccans are envious, they don’t understand them this is all. Moroccans are kind people, with my words I am not degrading the dignity of any people.

nawel Posted 2008-06-29

Hi Everybody, First of all, I would like to wish all this year’s candidates, especially those from the new programme, good luck on the baccalaureate exam. The exam with two subjects was very easy. It was so simple. From the bottom of my heart, I only hope that I will pass it. God alone knows how I left everything up to Him when I finished. I have stopped think about the grades, because I will pass it if i just get a 10. I have to get a 9 to fail it. It would be very difficult to fail with a 9, which is almost a 10. In fact, the teachers do not grade well. I worked to get a 20 in one subject, but I am afraid hat he will not give us 20’s. I am impatient to see the grades. I know that there are several people who feel the same. Good luck everybody and, God willing, I hope you all pass, especially those who worked hard.

bouzayani Posted 2008-07-01

keltoum Posted 2008-07-08

Hi everyone. God willing, you will all get the baccalaureate, oh Lord.

katia Posted 2008-07-08

I am a student in my senior year in the new programme, which is stressing enough as it is. It is very stressing. I will not tell you that I did not work, because this is not the case. What is stressing me out is that I am waiting for the results and having to listen to false rumours until the day they are announced.

ايمي Posted 2008-07-12

Eh Moroccans, you are jealous of Algeria even about the baccalaureate.

SOUNDOUS Posted 2008-07-15

May God curse you Ben Flic, may God curse the state. So you want us to spend all our life with the baccalaureate.

sarah Posted 2008-11-12

Hi everyone- My name is Sarah. I am from Tizi Ouzou. I go to Smaili Ali High School. I am doing languages and I am going to take the bac exam this year! The truth is that last year’s bac was a present from Benbouzid, so I am wondering if it will be the same this year!!! Za3ma they made the programme easier and one week ago they faxed us that we need to finish the programme before 15 May. What is more, they got rid of all of the classes we were supposed to take this year! In the name of God, what in the heck is going on!? Do you know, Mr Benbouzid, that this is a two-year programme, not a one-year? Indeed, we are they victims like usual!

asma Posted 2009-03-24

Salam alaikoum- I am a bac candidate and I want to know what the subjects are. Please, help me find the subjects so that I can study well and pass the bac. I await your response. –Thank you so much

safia Posted 2009-04-07

Please, Is there anyone who can send me or give me a link where I can find the subjects on the 2008 Bac exam on Arabic literature and philosophy (with corrections made). This would help me. –Thank you.

Matthew A. Cone Posted 2009-04-15

First and foremost- my name is posted above, therefore you all know who i am. I do know a little about you're culture, however i am still ignorant as to most of your cultural dynamics. i have trained with Saudi Royal Naval Forces at a prominent Naval Training Facility. I was watching a VIdeo Based on women's right's in Algeria( a Muslim Country). My friends from Saudi, they loved this country(my country-a.k.a. America) i understand that, of course, we are different, yet when i asked them why do you hate us?- they had no reply. they informed me of muslim tradition- especially towards women.to be honest with you, i woud probably say that, yes, our women are out of control to some extent. However, the same things that are happening in Algeria(for example)... Happened in this country long ago. Now .....i know that these things i speak of are, or , may be , insulting to the Islamic religon. Yet, I dare to say that we, as human beings, will never move forward until we realize that we (really ARE) =. (EQUAL) MEN AND WOMEN , BLACK AND WHITE, MUSLIM AND CHRISTIAN... SO FORTH AND SO ON. for what i can speak of i am proud to say that i have Arab friends.....simply beacause bad people come in all forms.....Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Black, White,Brown. What i have come to learn is that you Cannot judge A Book By It's Cover. This Woman Chaninaz Adele is right- simply because she is. we have to stop hating each other- because if we don't, we will all die together. PEACE

حمزة Posted 2009-05-01

Salam alikum. We have a problem in physical sciences which are not understood by all the class. The problem is with the teacher who doesn't know how to communicate the information to the pupil. In addition, the programme is long and very difficult.

yelles fatima Posted 2009-05-06

Abdelkader Posted 2009-06-03

I wonder who told you that the Algerian bac is not recognised in Europe. It was recently registered with the University of Sorbonne. Yes, the truth is that the Algerian bac exam is difficult, and you cannot pass it the first time. Personally, I did it on the third try. And, I cannot say that your bac exam is easy, because I have never seen it. I wish everyone success. In the end, we are all Maghreb and we all have the same mentality and the same borders.

selwa Posted 2009-06-10

I wish all the students good luck on the 2009 bac exam. -Thank you
