One year on: the April 11th 2007 attacks in Algiers

04/04/2008

On April 11th 2007, two suicide car bombs ripped through the prime minister's headquarters in Algiers and a police station in the capital's eastern Bab Ezzouar district, killing 33 and injuring at least 160. One year on, Magharebia is presenting a special section with archived coverage of the event and a collection of new articles which provide victims' perspectives and analytical insight into the Algerian government's counter-terrorism efforts. Please feel free to post your comments below, or in the individual articles posted in this section.

April 11th widow says terrorists destroyed her life
2008-04-10 On April 11th, 2007, young bride Nacira Djemli became a widow when her husband was killed in the Algiers bombing. Within days, she lost the twin babies she was expecting. One year later, she talks with Magharebia about what happens when dreams are destroyed by terrorists.
Algerians remember April 11
2008-04-04 It has been one year since the April 11th suicide attacks which targeted the Government Palace and a police station on the outskirts of Algiers. For the victims' families, attack survivors, and relatives of the suicide bombers, memories are still fresh, as is the pain.
April 11th anniversary passes quietly in Algeria
2008-04-14 The first anniversary of the fatal April 11th bombings in Algiers passed without a repeat of the violence. The Algerian government has worked hard to improve the security situation in the capital and elsewhere, and the efforts appear to be having the desired effect.
One year later, April 11th bombings still shaping Algerian policy
2008-04-08 Nearly a year after the tragic bombings in Algiers on April 11th, 2007, national security strategy has evolved considerably to face the changing threat of terrorism. New tactics employed by the authorities have achieved positive results, but much more effort will be required to put an end to the scourge of terrorism once and for all.

To al-Qaeda and our poor young people whose heads have been filled with senseless and baseless doctrine: Stop hiding behind religion- Islam has never supported the murder of innocents, whether Muslim or otherwise. No matter. Killing innocent souls is against the principles of this religion, our religion, my religion, or any other. Wake up! If Bin Laden and company (the imams who are filling your heads) claim to represent Muslims and Islam, why aren't they going and blowing themselves up? Don't they want a piece of this "paradise" they are describing to you? Think about it; if there really were a paradise for those who commit these acts, don't you think they would march in as volunteers? They are using you! You are nothing but insignificant sacrifices that they use to quench their hegemonic thirst. Power, control and blind revenge against "foreigners" who have done nothing wrong except being different- that is all Bin Laden and the like are after. Not for the glory of Islam. The glory of Islam is attained through the exercise of its principles. Tolerance, altruism, generosity, good speech and behaviour, respect for others... and I could go on. Let us not forget good neighbourhood- respect your neighbours, be they Muslim, Arab, Jewish, Israeli... or whatever, and leave politics aside. The language of the heart is more easily understood than that of violence.

I am wondering, if you make of Algeria a country of terrorism, where are Morocco and Egypt? It is intended to destroy Algeria with such fake articles. There is no power or will but from God. This isn’t a Maghreb magazine, this is shame in itself. Please reconsider the articles which bear poison in the fat. Thank you, a follower.

All the problems in Algeria are the results of bad management by the government. If the funds of Algeria were spent in a good way, there would be enough for all the people and we would have eradicated unemployment.

Terrorism has advanced with the progress of political hypocrisy of the authority. Algerians must again choose their candidates. The president must reconsider the head of his government and his stupid ministers, except some of them.

عبدالوهاب Posted 2008-04-15

Don’t you know that there is no al-Qaeda organisation in the Maghreb? Aren’t these just tricks by America, which pretends it is protecting itself from terrorism by eliminating Islamic countries? The American film 24 supports this by showing that the president has a direct link with terrorism. Why weren’t they able to eliminate Ben Laden? Because he is their toy…

nadia Posted 2008-04-15

Terrorism, it is a move considered by some as an important u-turn in the progress of relations between the two countries.

عبدالهادي Posted 2008-04-15

What next?

ريان Posted 2008-04-16

Professor Sakar, you are confusing two concepts. As regards terrorism it is just underdevelopment.

lkl Posted 2008-04-16

Terrorism is the enemy of happy life and it distorts the image of Islam. By God, if the prophet was alive, he would have said I disown you. We keep on saying: we merely want respect for ideas and a oppressive ruler, rather than permanent fitna. Our rulers pray to God and help in building mosques, so why should we disobey them?

Algeria will remain high no matter how long the bleeding lasts. A greeting to the Algerian people. Down with terrorism the criminals. CH from Palestine.

aliouat Posted 2008-04-16

Algeria is a nice country and there are courageous men who only fear God Almighty. The Algerians managed to fight quickly this plight which is foreign to Algerian society, thanks to their courage and the most courageous nation in the world in all fields. Terrorism is a passing cloud and the Algerians will get rid of it very quickly. They managed to defeat one of the greatest powers despite all its tyranny and equipment, so what of a bunch of lost men? You will see how Algeria will become the best country with the will of God. We shouldn’t go very far, those who know Algeria very well can just review what Algeria did. It has built roads during the mandate of the great president. May God protect him and grant him long life. He succeeded in raising this nice, dear, faithful and honest country and defy some countries in spite of the passing crises. He made miracles and spent more than other states on his sons, even more than rich countries. And have a better life. Praise be to God. Long live Algeria. we are still steady with the will of God. We won’t beg anyone. We will live as masters in spite of the envious and live as their masters.

The Algerian state wants the Algerian nation to forget the terrorist acts which targeted Algeria in recent years; this is why it doesn’t want to recall the sad events it has experienced.

عبد العزيز Posted 2008-04-17

First of all, terrorism is transcontinental, or in other words, as it has targeted as, it will also target other countries. As to the Maghreb interest in Algeria in particular, it is just to change political positions. Algeria is a strong country no matter what the conditions are. It is the beating heart in the countries of Arab Maghreb. As our noble president says, the Kaaba has its Lord who protects it, and here we are the protectors of Algeria, guardians of its territory and borders, servants of its nation. We are the descendants of the liberation army. And we are following their path as long as we live. Terrorism is a hard challenge. We will overcome it and crush it. We will push Algeria to the rank of major states, master of its decision and which has unchanged principles. We are with Palestine whether oppressed or oppressive. We are with the Western Sahara until it receives its independence. We are with the oppressed people. Why all these harassments from the Moroccan media. We love you because we consider you first and foremost brothers and relatives. I hope that all the Arab and Islamic nations will be united on one saying - there is no other God but Allah, Mohamed is the messenger of God- and support each other. From Abdelaziz Kalimi. Algeria.

Those who think that Algeria is a strong nation are mistaken. Most of you know that a significant share of the domestic product is from hydrocarbons. I think that if the president Bouteflika wants a third mandate, he must introduce many changes in his cabinet.

عماد مباركي Posted 2008-04-19

All my life I haven’t seen a terrorist or a person killed in front of me. What I can’t understand is why is Algeria always associated with terrorism though it is an international phenomenon in America, in Spain, in Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, America, Peru…what I can’t understand is why are some Western countries and brotherly countries, in other words, involved in the Jewish plot against the country of Tarik bin Ziyad.

مجيد Posted 2008-04-19

Our Algeria and we are proud of it. There are great men there whether you like or not. Those who are seeking to divide Algerians won’t succeed with the will of God. We are one nation from Algiers to Tamanrasset and from Elisy to Tindouf.

After greetings. My dear men and women readers. I don’t hide to you that the topic of Algeria is a thorny one which made it a subject of constant controversy and and debate. But this doesn’t deny the fact that terrorism doesn’t exist only in Algeria, it spread in most parts of the world. But I don’t advise any person to enter in any useless debate. Those quick to criticise should rather offer us solutions not criticism because we are people who want progress.

jazayri Posted 2008-04-19

If Algeria had competent politicians, we wouldn’t have reached that level of terrorism. And why do they not want to open borders with Morocco. If the Arab Maghreb Union convention was implemented, we wouldn’t have reached this situation and Algeria wouldn’t have been victim of terrorism. We hope that the Algerian politicians will widen their minds a little because a Maghreb mind = ten Algerian pockets.

طالب جامعي Posted 2008-04-20

We need to finally be clear on the issue of terrorism, even if, as all the ulemma have said, we are only the laymen of Islam. Therefore, whether they are in New York, Casablanca or Algiers, terrorists are the same and should have the same punishment. But, may no one mix up Islam, the universal religion that it is, with the actions of these little barbarians.

slim16 Posted 2008-04-20

As an Algerian, I think that the cause that the terrorists were defending and that continues on in the Algerian maquis was lost before they even began, since they received their orders from al-Qaeda, which is just a whorehouse serving no other purpose than to kill innocents—something that is prohibited by our religion. The people as a whole are against their actions. The day will come where they must take account for them before God! God is Great! -From Algiers, bye

tiartis Posted 2008-04-22

The day when all the Algerian people understand that the future of their children and their nephews is in their hands is the day that Algeria will make a great leap forward in progress. This does not exclude the ministers and generals, because where they are headed (even with their money) it will only be Algeria that opens its arms to them and it will only be the Algerians who will have stories to tell to their children and the children of the corrupt.

tiartis Posted 2008-04-22

Despite everything, I love you, Algeria. But, tomorrow, each one of us must make take responsibility for his own doings. Woe to the leaders.

To Aziz I say that the generals you are blindly defending are the source of all of our misfortune. You must be a part of this rotten system. [expletive] Let us make our country democratic, make it to where the people command it, not a fistful of power-hungry generals, who have authority over everybody and everything. They have soiled our memory of the true mujaheddins, stealing from them their historic legitimacy. If they were to ever return one day, they would start by fighting off these impostors, these false mujaheddins. You talk of a noble president!? Go take a look at his Swiss bank account. Islam is not terrorism. “Terrorist” comes from the word “terror”. Sowing terror has never been a Muslim thing to do. How are the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), the red brigades, the mafia and so on to be classified? Where do all of them come from? Was not the first hijacking French? Was not the OAS a terrorist organisation? Everything that is going on now is nothing but the workings of the major evangelistic powers in order to tarnish the holiest of religions. Much remains to be said.

By God the greatest, what can I say, just for God we are and to God we shall return. God won’t let any oppressor because they look at martyrdom in a different way. Finally, martyrdom is not to kill your brother in religion. My opinion is the martyr in the cause of Jerusalem, Islam and Palestine not like those martyrs because their fate is hell and they will reside there eternally. Jihad for the cause of God isn’t as they understand it because Jihad for the cause of God is defending Islam not killing us, and we are Muslims by God Almighty. We are concerned about our sons and brothers in the face of these criminals who brainwash their brothers in order to ruin their future and the future of the Arab and Islamic nation. To conclude, whatever I say, I wouldn’t have retaliated from these infidel criminals who don’t deserve burying because what they do against their brothers is illegal. The crisis gives birth to determination. Every illness has a treatment. We the Algerians have the solutions to all the problems. The biggest problem in which we are entangled in order to find a solution is the problem of the savage mentality left by the colonizer within the Algerian society. I suggest to solve this problem building universities specializing in the development of thought and develop the methodology of managing human resources for this beloved country which badly needs its people to rise to the challenge and build an Algeria stronger than the Algeria before 1830.

This website is under the influence of this office and that is why we are able to find such alarming articles as this one on the April bombings. As much as this story is sad, is it even real? Who is offering us this interview in terms of the information in it?

Give them their land; the phosphate does not belong to you. There you have it: the reason that you hold so strongly on to the Sahara.

Every offender deserves a punishment. My Lord is their ultimate judge. (God almighty gives you a chance to repent but never forgets your sins.) Thank God that there are still men and women in Algeria with integrity, who love and cherish their country. They are the nationalists and patriots defending the nation such as ANP and their likes. I would like to tell our “neighbour” foot-kissers, who have voluntarily submitted themselves and are amnesiac when it comes to history, that it would do better to mend their own problems instead of stuffing their brains with unfounded articles coming from the corrupt press of countries that support terrorism and chaos in Algeria, from the countries that wanted to stick a knife in our backs during the worst moment Algeria and Algerians lived through, from countries that Algeria helped and supported in the not-so-distant past. These are the countries and people that have called themselves friends and yet have always secretly wanted to see Algeria buried. God willing, Algeria will never fall! God willing, your day will come and you will suffer the worst. The past will be your witness on this day and will come to cry on the shoulders of Algerians. And, Algeria will always remain faithful to the principle of freedom and its policy of good neighbourliness — history will bear witness to this. Algeria will continue its climb and will build its future without a care for anyone else. Lions do not care about cats. Algeria will remember the meaning of its name. Glory to our martyrs! Long live Algeria!

Is killing people who say “There is no god but God” jihad...?

سالم الزير Posted 2008-05-17

Algeria and you don't know what Algeria is.

bidrou400@yahoo.fr Posted 2008-05-17

Salam alikoum. We are brothers in Algeria from the East to the West and from North to the South. We must be united hand in hand in our country. Hold on firmly to our president, he is our example for the country's reform. We must work for Algeria. Thank you.

سيف الدين قطز Posted 2008-05-17

Long live Algeria, down with the traitors and mercenaries. Down with the Khawarij and the dissidents of Islam, Bin Laden and Zawahiri.

adel baroudi éyudiant universitaire Posted 2008-05-18

It seems like terrorism is being supported by Morocco in order to create a new wave of violence. Long live Algeria!

Onyx Posted 2008-05-18

I am disappointed in all this hatred between us Algerians and our Moroccan brothers and sisters! You are completely blinded by your prejudices! Or perhaps this is just the expression of some personal grudges! Stop denigrating and insulting each other! The problem with the Western Sahara has already poisoned state relations, and the protagonists are big enough deal with this professionally. For those of you who exchange insults instead of exchanging ideas: be intelligent! Talk to those who are like you so that you can finally collect yourselves and discuss what is dividing you calmly and without hate. I do not know why—and I swear to you this is true—every time I read hateful comments on both sides, I tell myself, “These people must not be Moroccans or Algerians; they have to be provocateurs!” I say this because I know Moroccans and their position towards Algeria is light-years ahead of what I am reading here! On the same token, the people insulting the Moroccans should be ashamed! I mean, really! This is simply stupid. Moreover, stop looking for American, Jewish and Al-Qaeda conspiracies everywhere! The terrorists know quite well that Algeria is a bone upon which they will crack their teeth! Ever since September 11th — and get this into your head once and for all — the American people have been our brothers in arms against blind, stupid and malicious terrorism. Bush is Bush and the American people are the American people. Moreover, I do not know of a single Algerian or Moroccan who has stood up to the Israeli armours; but an American did! Yes, Jimmy Carter said something this week that neither Mohamed VI or Bouteflika ever said. In essence, he said “What Israel is doing in Gaza in monstrous!” So, people, do like the Americans! Do like the Jews! Go turn the dessert into a paradise! The North African boat people are doing us a lot more harm than the hateful comments of our enemies! Whether it be in Morocco or Algeria, there are enormous opportunities to work and to make miracles happen! But, it is strange that instead of helping one another, we are tearing each other apart. So, is Magharebia being the anteroom for a Judeo-Christian conspiracy against Islam a reality or is this the campaigning of sick minds wont for enemies? Believe me, forget about it. Mind your own education and the education of your children and truly work for the country you say you love, but that all you do is idealise. As for Islam, given your comments, you are far from being able to talk about religion. Mind what you good you can do on this earth. Treat others as you wish to be treated. Is this not right? Long live Morocco and long live Algeria!

REZKI Posted 2008-05-21

Bravo Onyx! There are still intelligent people out there with their heads on their shoulders. Thank God!

mlika Posted 2008-05-23

When you don’t reach grapes you say that they are bitter (sour). Long live Algeria and Algerians.

chakira Posted 2008-05-25

It is always the same thing. We always find the town criers saying that everything happens because of the authorities. I don’t think so. Indeed, I am talking about Algeria. Before the damned FIS came, the people were living in harmony. Moreover, I do not understand Aljazeera: they only support Al-Qaeda.

sofia Posted 2008-05-29

Terrorism is not a phenomenon restricted only to Algeria. It is also in Morocco. May God save us. Morocco and Algeria will be brothers forever.

Onyx Posted 2008-05-29

You are right, Chakira. Personally, I stopped watching Aljazeera and, believe me, I am doing just fine. It is a source of mental poison, numbing you, turning you into someone else! The most worrisome part is that they do this for the cash: a bigger audience means more advertisers, and that is where the money comes from! The Arab masses, to borrow an adage from home, see only fire. (No pun intended.) Before, we used to be pleased to see an Arab channel competing with CNN. What a shame!

imad Posted 2008-06-01

Long live Magharebia.com!

karima l'algerienne Posted 2008-06-01

As for you, I would give my life to protect you from your enemies. I love you. I love you. I am talking about my country. Long live Algeria! Algeria my love, my country I love you!

حديبي مفتاح البليدة Posted 2008-06-02

Despite the ailment and the enemies we will remain like an eagle on the high summit, whether you want or not.

mohamed Posted 2008-06-02

Why did all this happen? What did we do?

سليم _باتنة Posted 2008-06-08

Long live Algeria and its faithful men. We are against terrorism and against the traitors Arab agents including neighbouring countries.

Ego Posted 2008-06-11

Karima! How lovely your sincere disinterest is! And, you yourself are sincerely disinteresting! Thank you for our Algeria! But, don’t they say, my dear sister, that it is through pain that great nations are born?

Ego Posted 2008-06-19

Simply put: Bravo! Onyx.

Ego Posted 2008-06-23

Bravo Onyx! Bravo for your first comment, not the one addressed to Chakira. I do not agree with you there, because this is old news. Whether you and your Chakira like it or not and whether you want it or not, Al Jazeera is and will always be a great channel, with which the entire world has to compete for its favour in vain, because it is one of the most credible channels in the world. Money is the lifeline of all wars, including that of Al Jazeera’s. And, personally, I support them completely.

mimlou Posted 2008-07-04

You are a threat to the Maghreb nation.

عبد الله الانباري Posted 2008-07-04

We haven’t heard you talk about the crimes of dictatorship regimes in these countries. This is a mere replication of dictatorial propaganda. Mujahids, although they have caused all this for Muslims, they never meant it. They always declare this day and night but you don’t believe me, you believe Bouteflika.

billel the globetrotter Posted 2008-09-02

In fact,Algeria will remain strong and stronger than before..it's a mere Maroccain Propaganda.they want to persuade the whole world that Algeria is the source of terrorism....White Algeria will be whiter one day.

azo alger Posted 2008-09-09

Terrorism is darkness. It has not found the force to stop.

mohamed Posted 2008-12-29

We talk about terrorism but in order to talk comprehensively about this topic, we must know the causes of terrorism, its origins and causes. Let me my brothers and sisters tell you that there is no terrorism. There are just people who want to distort the image of Islam in the world. Therefore they have chosen the word terrorism. Reply to me honestly, does the true Muslim kill his Muslim brother? No never. There is a criminality, yes, but there is no terrorism. The word terrorism was fabricated by the Jews who are skilled in terrorism. I know that there are people who want to know what is in the minds of citizens, but only the correct thing is accepted.
