Tunisia denies entry to radical Moroccan preachers
2012-05-16 Tunisian authorities barred two Moroccan radical preachers from entering Tunisian territory, interior ministry spokesman Khaled Tarrouche said on Tuesday (May 15th).
Hassan Kettani and Omar Hadouchi were stopped at the Tunis-Carthage airport on Monday night. A Bizerte organisation had invited the preachers to present a series of lectures in the town.
The two Moroccan preachers were sentenced for "indoctrination of [the] Islamists" who committed the deadly 2003 Casablanca attacks. They were serving 20-year prison terms before being pardoned on February 2nd, 2012.
Tunisia's Kebili gets new governor
2012-05-15 Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali appointed a new governor for the oasis town of Kebili, Tunisia Live reported on Tuesday (May 15th).
Amara Tlijani replaces Salah Sebaï, who resigned from his position following complaints from citizens.
Kebili residents mounted a general strike on May 7th to demand government action on the region's chronic unemployment.
Italian president to visit Tunisia
2012-05-15 Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki on Wednesday (May 16th) will welcome his Italian counterpart Giorgio Napolitano for a two-day state visit, Tunisia Live reported.
The Italian president's trip aims to "further consolidate relations of friendship between the two countries", Marzouki's office said in a statement. Napolitano will also meet with Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali and visit the Constituent Assembly.
Tunisian security services stage protest
2012-05-14 The labour union for Tunisia's internal security forces organised a protest in Tunis on Sunday (May 13th) to demand legal protections during and out of working hours, TAP reported. According to union head Montassar El-Matri, the protest was organised in solidarity with police officers.
Nacef Nassib, General Secretary of the Union of the National Guard, said that a security officer cannot ensure the protection of citizens if he himself "does not feel protected by the law".
Tunisia constitution ready by November
2012-05-11 Tunisia's Constituent Assembly president on Thursday (May 10th) proposed November 22nd as the date for the final adoption of the constitution, MosaiqueFM reported.
Mustapha Ben Jaafar also confirmed that the country's next parliamentary elections would be held on March 20th, 2013.
