Maghreb marks Int'l Day for Elimination of Violence against Women
26/11/2009
Algeria launched a national campaign on Wednesday (November 25th) to mark the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women. The awareness-raising initiative, set to run until mid-December, will include the creation of a national database to record incidents of gender-based violence, Algerian Family and Women's Affairs Minister Nouara Saâdia Djaâfar said at a ceremony in Dar El Imam.
To mark the day in Mauritania, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) hosted a meeting with ulemas, government officials and journalists. UNDP representative Maria Do Valle Robeiro called on the ulemas to become more involved in countering violence against women, APA reported. For his part, Mohamed Ould Ely Telmoudi of the Social Affairs Ministry said that eradicating discrimination and violence against women was an "absolute necessity".
Tunisia and Morocco both issued statements on Wednesday recalling legislative reforms to improve women's role in society and defend women's rights, including the Personal Status Code in Tunisia and the Moudawana in Morocco.
