UN Secretary-General appoints new Western Sahara envoy

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed US diplomat Christopher Ross as his personal envoy for Western Sahara, his spokeswoman said on Wednesday (January 7th). Ross will replace Peter Van Walsum of the Netherlands, whose mandate expired last August. The diplomat is a former US Ambassador to Syria and Algeria. Recently, he worked as a Senior Adviser for the Middle East and North Africa at the US Mission to the UN.
