Repentant Algerian terrorist details tough life amid armed groups

15/10/2008

A repentant Algerian terrorist who recently surrendered in Tlemcen province told security forces about his former cell's difficult living conditions, Echorouk reported on Tuesday (October 14th). After large-scale military operations shut down their main supply sources, terrorists scattered around the Mizab mountains, Tadjerra, Al Assfour and the forest region of Souk Al Arbaa have been forced to raid farms and steal livestock in order to survive, "Abdelhak" said. The 26-year-old, whose father and brother were active in the same group before they were killed by Algerian security forces, joined al-Qaeda precursor GSPC last year. He reportedly decided to surrender to local authorities after a number of terrorists were eliminated in cordon and search operations and surviving cell members had to reconsider their strategy and move out of the mountains.
