Social protest movement leader arrested in Tunisia

23/06/2008

Tunisian union leader Adnane Hajji was arrested on Sunday (June 22nd) together with an unspecified number of colleagues after organising protests at Redeyef in the Gafsa mining region, AFP reported. The protests over rising costs of living and unemployment culminated on June 6th, when a young man was shot dead and 22 injured in a clash with security forces. Justice and Human Rights Minister Bechir Tekkari regretted the death of the man and the injuries but said the situation got out of control when the crowd began throwing Molotov cocktails.
