Morocco begins implementing plan to modernise fishing sector

27/01/2008

Morocco's National Fishery Office (ONP) announced on Friday (January 25th) that it has begun implementation of a strategic plan to modernise the country's fishing sector. The 270 million-euro programme for 2008-2012 calls for the reorganisation of the national distribution network and the development of artisan fishing.

Financing for the programme comes from the Hassan II Fund for Economic and Social Development, the EU and the Spanish government. Through the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the United States has also granted $3.9 million for the construction of a fish landing station in Tifnit, 43km south of Agadir. The project aims to benefit 450 local fishermen through improved working conditions, the protection of fishery resources and the construction of a slipway, fish store, and hall equipped with an ice factory and freezer room.
