France gives Algeria detailed map of independence war mines

21/10/2007

France's General Jean-Louis Georgelin gave Algeria's Lieutenant General Ahmed Gaid Salah detailed maps of the Morice and Challe lines of landmines the French army laid along Algeria’s eastern and western borders between 1956 and 1959, APS quotes the French army as saying on Saturday (October 20th).

AFP quotes Algerian official sources as saying that approximately three million anti-personnel mines which were planted to prevent independence fighters from entering the country are still in place. A statement from the French embassy in Algiers indicated that the move aims at "removing the obstacles inherited from the past and building relations of trust with Algeria."

Georgelin arrived in Algiers on Saturday for a four-day visit.
