Al-Qaeda claims responsibility for Friday suicide bombing in Algeria
23/09/2007
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the suicide bomb attack on Friday (September 21st) that wounded nine people near Lakhdaria, including two Frenchman and an Italian. In an audio statement posted on the Internet, al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb said "martyrdom-seeker Othman Abu Jaafar" carried out the attack with a car laden with over 250 kilos of explosives. The tape also said the three foreigners were killed, but Algerian authorities firmly rejected the claim and insisted that all nine injured in the attack are in stable condition. The attack came one day after al-Qaeda's second-in-command Ayman Al-Zawahiri called on armed groups active in the Arab Maghreb to expel the French and Spaniards from the entire region because they are considered "the new invaders".
