Campaign for Morocco’s September legislative elections kicks off
26/08/2007
Morocco’s parliamentary election campaign kicked off Saturday (August 25th) and will continue through midnight, September 6th, MAP reported. Candidates vying for 325 seats in the House of Representatives will stand for election on September 7th. At a Friday press conference marking the conclusion of the nominations period, Interior Minister Chakib Benmoussa said a total of 1,870 local tickets from 33 competing political parties and 13 independent candidates had been submitted to the authorities, including 26 women-only national lists. The elections are the first in Morocco since the parliament approved a law on political parties in October 2005, aimed at political reform and boosting transparency. International observers led by the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs will monitor the elections, alongside the Consultative Council for Human Rights.

Morocco’s September 2007 legislative elections will be held under good terms between the people, the political parties and the government. His Majesty, Mohammed VI gave a strict decree that everything will be done in a climate of transparency, without fraud and corruption. The voters have decided to show Morocco as an example of a democratic state of legality. The people are happy and everyone in Morocco is intending to vote to meet this challenge. The only thing you can hear coming from the Moroccans' mouths is: “We are going to vote in mass! We are going to meet the challenge!” -Signed, Acharif Moulay Abdellah Bouskraoui
