The UN Security Council voted on Tuesday (October 31st) to extend the UN mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for another six months until April 30th 2007 and called on all parties in the conflict and neighbouring states to co-operate fully with MINURSO in bringing peace to the disputed territory and "to achieve progress towards a political solution".
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's latest report on the region recommended the six-month extension for the mission and called on Morocco and the Polisario Front to drop any preconditions and begin negotiations to try to find a lasting solution to their long-standing conflict. His report also said the neighbouring countries of Algeria and Mauritania should be invited to participate in any peace talks. (United Nations)
