Morocco's Groupes Urbains de Sécurité disbanded
18/10/2006
The Directorate General of National Security in Morocco announced Monday (October 16th) its decision to disband the Groupes Urbains de Sécurité (GUS) riot police group as part of a major reorganisation within the police and army. The 5,000 members will be re-integrated into other parts of the security services, a statement of the directorate said.
Aujourd'hui le Maroc quotes the statement as saying that the move would improve efficiency of the security forces and allow them to protect the well-being of the country's citizens.
The GUS was formed in 2004 following Casablanca bombings in 2003 and the increase of terrorist threats. The group was often criticised for the brutal way they dealt with riots. (Aujourd'hui le Maroc, BBC, MAP)

Too bad. They should have behaved properly! Moreover, they had experienced traffic bribery, which added another non official tax on our poor country’s citizens. Good riddance!
