Magharebia behind the scenes at the Star Academy Maghreb finale
2007-07-06
The first season of popular Star Academy Maghreb came to a close last Friday (June 29th), in a star-studded evening filled with entertainment and suspense. Magharebia spoke with the show's contestants and producers, who talked about the gamble of Star Academy, and the show's future.

Star Academy Maghreb, the hit television show that was the first of its kind in the region, transformed the Outik area on the outskirts of Tunis into a meeting place for people from throughout the Maghreb. Representatives of communications firms, publicists, artists, businessmen and diplomats came together to witness the finale of the first Star Academy Maghreb and to evaluate the experience now that it is complete.
The journey begun on Star Academy Maghreb's first season came to a close Friday night (June 29th), making room for the next to begin. The show chronicled 14 young people's search for stardom through 16 weeks of seclusion at the Academy. Nabil Karoui, founder of Nessma TV and sponsor of Star Academy Maghreb, spoke with Magharebia shortly before the start of the final round. Speaking of the four final contestants he said, "They are all winners in my estimation, and a promising future awaits them all." Karoui added that all 14 contestants will have an opportunity to start their careers. "We set up a series of performances during which they will travel through the Maghreb region and to France, where they will embrace their fans, who number in the thousands."
Preparations for the final round continued throughout the week, all the way through Friday evening. Nessma TV recruited more than 350 assistants, including technicians, communications staff and designers. Top stars from the Maghreb including Saber Ribai, Lutfi Bushnaq, Chebba Zahouania, Cheb Khaled and Faudel were invited to the finale. Technicians prepared a grand, "red carpet"-style entrance for these celebrity guests, to evoke the feeling of major international festivals like the Cannes Film Festival.
Algerian artist Hamdi Benani was also present. "The Academy brought together all the peoples of the Maghreb countries," he said. "It will be a historic occasion, and I hope it will not be the last. I am happy with these young people, who began sensing a dream starting to come true."
Libyan artist Abdelmajid Haqiq described the final performance as a "big wedding and glorious gathering of the people of the Maghreb." Algerian artist Nabil El Khaldi said "This is one of the best moments in my artistic life. With it we wrote lines in Maghreb history, and the millions viewing this programme are evidence that we possess art and culture."
In the moments before the final prime began, audience members and performers alike whispered rumours and predictions of the winners' names among themselves. Hamid’s sister Hakima failed to hide her tears every time she was asked her opinion on the speculations circulating the crowd. "I hope Hamid wins, but I believe Maghrebis are the winners in the end", she said.
The conversations ended with the announcement of star Faudel, who was the first to take the stage. "I am happy to be here. We must be in solidarity," he said. Khaled, or the King of Rai as he is called, said that he came to encourage all the contestants without exception.
More than 14 million viewers saw Nabil Karoui climb the stage with pride, holding a big cigar. In evaluating the show's achievements during the past few months, he announced, "We can claim that we laid a strong brick in the Maghreb structure." Laughing, he added, "In any case, we are awaiting the journalists’ verdict in this matter." He said that they are "the most capable of evaluating" because they "sit in a neutral zone".
"We want to be Maghrebis and to offer full support to all Maghreb talent. Maghrebis today have their channels to showcase their talents, and Star Academy succeeded in overcoming difficulty," said Karoui. "We did it for the sake of Maghreb youth," said Karoui's brother, Ghazi, who sat on the judging committee.
At 1 a.m. on Saturday, with Moroccan host Nabila’s announcement that voting had ended, anxiety intensified and supporters of this or that contestant left to smoke cigarettes outside the hall, which was packed with fans gathering signatures and snapping photos of their favourite stars.
Half an hour later, with halting language to add to the suspense, Nabila announced that Tunisia's Soraya was the first to be eliminated, followed by Morocco's Hamid. Hajar and Ahmed remained, face to face, experiencing one of the most difficult moments of their lives. Each of them began to point to the other as the sure winner. In the end, and with rising hubbub in the crowd, Nabila announced that Hajar was the first winner of Star Academy Maghreb, sending the hall into a state of hysteria.

Tears mixed with the shouts of fans and Hajar was speechless. Incapable of realising what happened, she forgot to don the crown given to her by Nabil Karoui. Her mother leapt onto the stage with the speed of a professional athlete, took it and planted it on her winning daughter’s hair.
"We were all wrong in predicting that the Tunisian would win," said Tunisian Sirine over the din of voices. "The Karoui brothers succeeded in firmly establishing their neutrality." In a soft voice, Sirine told Magharebia, "I heard many rumours tonight that the winner would be Tunisian no matter what, on the pretext that the programme is managed and financed by Tunisians. Thank God we passed the test."
The announcement of the winner did not mark the end of the gathering. Rather, everyone was awaiting another get-together for eating grilled meat and tasty Tunisian dishes. Indeed, everyone needed to replenish their strength, as making it through that summer night required much energy.
On Monday, with all fourteen contestants in attendance, Nabil Karoui announced that the Academy had achieved its goals. Pointing to the students, he said "Before you today are the best of the Maghreb's youth, who succeeded in rising to the challenge... Hajar, who won the first Star Academy Maghreb, profited greatly, as she will be able to produce a music album and benefit from a global marketing venture with all expenses paid by Karoui and Karoui." Nabil also disclosed that the Academy did not merely succeed in attracting those with artistic and singing talents, but also in preparing a group of local technicians and artists in the field of television. "This is a challenge we deserved to win."
He added that next year's group would include the entire Maghreb region, with Mauritania’s entry into the competition. "The means are available now," he said, "especially given that the two companies working in the communication field in Mauritania are Tunisian and Moroccan."

I am not “fine” because I did not win.

Is the artist Nabil El Khalidi from Morocco or Algeria as you have published
هاجر Posted 2007-07-10
I'm very proud of Hajar because she has a nice voice, second thing we have the same name, go ahead in your career and raise the head of the Arab Maghreb with your authentic art

Bravo to all the candidates, especially Hajar.
hala Posted 2007-07-10
Hajar, beloved of the public, I hope that you'll save Maghreb song so that it will be heard in the East. Good luck to all young talent!
Amina Posted 2007-07-11
Hi to all the candidates on Star Academy besides Hajar. Frankly, I want to tell you that you do not deserve to take the first Star Academy because you are a LOSER. My reason for saying this is because there are other candidates that deserve it. It is a shame that Nessma TV, Miditell and especially Ilham were on your side. This is the first big shame for the Maghreb. And I am certain that you are not going to be presented with the candidates from the other Star Academies.
حسنية Posted 2007-07-11
In the name of God, thank you Nessma channel and congratulations my sister Hajar for taking the star title. In fact, you deserve all the good as well as all candidates including Hamid, Ahmed, Firas, Khairi, Jamal, Badrou, Yosra, Soraya, Kaoutar, Dounia...and all the staff working on the success of this program. You know, when I finish work, I go home directly in order to follow your news, as for Friday, by God, I haven't worked just to watch you. May God grant you success and make things easier for you.
touria Posted 2007-07-12

The title to Farid, long live Algeria!
momo Posted 2007-07-13
Congratulations Hajar, but Farid deserves the title more than anyone, but he wasn't lucky in voting in the absence of Jezzy line from the competition as it includes 10 million subscribers.
هاجر Posted 2007-07-14
I'm Hajar from Morocco I would like to greet Nessma channel and all the participants as I love them so much namely our beloved Hajar who won the title of Maghreb academy star for the first year of the program and who has raised the flag of Morocco and honoured us with her nice voice and the smile which doesn't leave her voice. I wish her success in her artistic career.

What do you think about Bouchra 'X factor' from Morocco, the lion Oussama from Libya, don't they deserve to be encouraged, they're great and represent the Arab Maghreb.
hala Posted 2007-07-20
the tour without its star Hajar is valueless, with my respect to others.
hala Posted 2007-07-20
Hajar, your pride is our pride, better than the tour, even if the tour is tasteless without you.
ايمان واميمة وامير كبالا_ Posted 2007-07-21
Hajar, a thousand congratulations, you deserved the title with merit, better than Dounia who wasn't to the level honouring Algeria, we also love Badrou, Farid, Jamal. (Algeria) Biskra, Hay Jawad.

Hi everybody, I want to say that you all deserve, I want to say to Ahmed you have won the hearts of Moroccans with your attitude towards the Moroccans with you Hajar, Hamid and Farah. Thank you.
Nabil Posted 2007-08-01
Hajar I love you so much, Nabil Sana'a Yemen.
khaoula Posted 2007-08-01
Congratulations hajar for taking the title of the Maghreb star though I wished it for Ahmed. Anyway, you also deserve it Hajar. I wish you success in your artistic career and inchallah always successful.
مغربي حر Posted 2007-08-02
Who is Hajar who has raised the flag of Morocco??!! Anyone who reads what you write without watching the program would think that 'Hajar' (who raised the flag of Morocco), would think that it's her who has opened Andalusia and liberated Ceuta and Mellia...and raised the flag.
منى Posted 2007-08-03
You deserve the title as you're a real artist, I wish you a good luck.
امير كابالا Posted 2007-08-03
Hamid, Jamal, Farid and Badrou, we love you so much.
hala Posted 2007-08-03
To the free Moroccan, if you were Moroccan, you wouldn't have asked that question. Of course we're talking about the Moroccan song. Do you read articles without taking any interest in the title. Bouchra the Moroccan is in the second rank + and more, Ossama the Libyan is in the third rank, and Mohamed the Syrian is in the first rank, our congratulations to him.
sara Posted 2007-08-05
Hajar deserved to win! Congratulations to her! Long live Morocco!
amal Posted 2007-08-06
The thing I'll tell you is that may God protect your parents and protect you.
هناء Posted 2007-08-07
I preferred Ahmed or Jamal to win, I hate Yosra a lot.
Hiba Posted 2007-08-07
Hamid is a traitor who does not love his country. What is more, his is ruthlessly ambitious. Hajar is the best and she deserved to win.
nabil Posted 2007-08-14
Hi, hello, how are you, I'm Nabil, I love Soraya, RAJA forever, you're the most beautiful girl in the world, always my love.
hadjer Posted 2007-08-17
Hajar, you alone deserved to be the star. Congratulations! I looooooooove you!!!
rachidi Posted 2007-08-20
I want to watch the last last prime because I didn't see it before.

I’m Said with the performance of young people I hope to get a site from which I can download the works ad pictures of Khairi and Ahmed. With the permission of the dear reader, please provide me with the site or any other way to get these works of Ahmed and Khairi with my thanks and respect. I’m sure that the Maghreb brothers, namely the Libyans, will reply to my request. Thank you all in advance and happy new year.
najat Posted 2008-01-04
Salam, how are you. What star academy is in the world, you seem to forget yourselves, you are supposed to be Muslims. Is singing allowed, have you ever seen any Moroccan doing his ablutions and going to pray or an Algerian, may God guide you. Stand up and follow the Lebanon star academy, it has started as well. Najat from Taza, 16 years old.
امال من الجزائر Posted 2008-01-10
By God, it's Abdelhamid and Hajar who deserve the title. Honestly, we love them so much, inchallah, they'll be successful, the honey of Tangier and flower of Casablanca. By the way, Soraya doesn't deserve to stay in the final, I hate her because she stayed away from Firas in his comeback and stayed with Hamid who voted for her. And I hate anyone who fools him, if anyone fools him, I will shake the earth against him. I'm jealous for Hamid.
la mou reuse de walid hamane Posted 2008-01-31
Of course because we Moroccans are always beautiful and inchallah Asmae Basite will be a star, yes.
نسمة بن حدور Posted 2008-02-05
Hajar deserves the title. She's the best candidate in the program.
mohamed Posted 2008-02-08
I'm proud of all Moroccans all of them, ok, especially the beautiful Hajar.
farah Posted 2008-02-14
Hajar I love you so much and I loved you daily on the great and successful Nessma channel. I have always wished you success in your career. You really deserve success; you have raised Morocco's chin. I love you to death. You’re a star, a successful star.
adel Posted 2008-02-23
We ask that an opportunity to participate in the programme will be offered to young girls and boys from the East of Libya as well as the songs and heritage of this region (Benghazi, Jbel Akhdar, Derna ad Tabrok). It is a distinct and authentic type of music. We also hope to call for the talent and experience of artists from this region, such as Brahim Fahmi, Brahim Achraf and Salmine Zerouk, in presenting songs and as members of the jury. We have seen in this programme only Libyan music or Libyan artists from the region of Tripoli!!! Adil Omar from Benghazi.
kawtar Posted 2008-03-02
I am not Moroccan - I want oriental music.
LOUBNA Posted 2008-03-07
Hajar will always be a star. Long live Morocco. Hamodi is a star. Loubna from Morocco, Meknes.
fadwa Posted 2008-03-09
In all honesty, Hajar Adnane is a real Moroccan artist. She deserved to win Star Academy. I adore her style... and everything about her. I loooooove you, Hajar!
madani Posted 2008-03-09
Neither Hajar, Ahmad or Soraya deserve the title. It is Hamid who deserves the title of the Maghreb Star Academy because he sings well and is not selfish. He speaks four languages and he sings in all of them. Honestly, Hamid is the best one, he sings with feelings, from his heart. You’re lucky Tangier people and all Moroccan people because God granted you an artist at the level of Hamid, we hope to see him.
salma Posted 2008-03-26
I thank Hajar for her success and want her to produce a new album. Thank you.
nisrine Posted 2008-04-09
I want to be a happy singer with the will of God. And since I will rely on God and you, I hope that you will guide me to which side should I go which might help me. Many thanks. Nisrine.
