El Moutawakel appointed to IOC executive board

Morocco's Nawal El Moutawakel was elected to the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) executive board on Thursday (August 7th), becoming the first woman from the Muslim world to hold the position. El Moutawakel, 46, also made history at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, when she won the 400m hurdles competition. She was the first woman from a predominantly Muslim country to win an Olympic medal in the Games.
