El Haouaria, Tunisia, will hold its annual Sparrow Hawk Festival 28-30 May. About 150 local falconers will show off their prowess in training sparrow hawks and compete in a series of contests to distinguish whose bird is the best hunter. The competition is accompanied by local traditional music performances.
The migratory birds are kept until the end of summer when the rest of their flock return. The reunited sparrow hawks will then fly south. (Travelmax)
