Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane were captains on the football teams that played the charity "Match Against Poverty" on Tuesday (14 December) in Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid. The two stars organized the evening in their role as Goodwill Ambassadors to the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The decision to provide free entrance in exchange for a discretionary donation not only ensured that substantial funds would be raised for UNDP projects in Brazil and Algeria, it also allowed children from families with limited resources to cheer on their heroes.
As well as raising money for impoverished children, the game also offered the football world a chance to show its staunch opposition to terrorism, as it followed the bomb scare that forced the evacuation of the stadium and the abandonment of Real Madrid's match last week. On a night when the 4-4 result was of secondary importance, Real French star Zidane thanked everyone who lent their support to the cause. (FIFA.com)
