Tunisia recently launched a female football league with the hopes of qualifying for international tournaments. The 12-team league will battle for the Tunisia Cup, for which the quarterfinals will be held on 26 February.

Tunisian Football Federation head Hammouda Ben Ammar said two national women’s teams are slated for creation: one for seniors and one for juniors under age 19. The teams will be formed in the hopes of entering the 2007 African Nations Cup and the 2008 Olympics.

FIFA currently has only two female Arab teams listed in its rankings of 117 countries. Tunisia's North African neighbours Algeria and Morocco are ranked 74th and 54th in the world; respectively; though neither played in the Athens Olympics. (AFP)
