Moroccan Agriculture Minister Fights Desertification

2004-11-08

At a conference of North African agriculture ministers recently held in Tunis, Moroccan Minister of Agriculture Mohand Laenser said although an anti-desertification effort is under way in his country, more must be done to alert the public on desertification. Laenser said Morocco allocates $50m to treat 650,000 hectares of agricultural land, about 10 per cent of the total area treated in the Arab Maghreb Union.

Laenser appealed for more aid on behalf of Mauritania, which is ravaged by desertification, but has not benefited from aid received by neighbouring Senegal, Niger and Mali. The conference called for closer co-operation between the Arab Maghreb Union countries. (albawaba.com)
