Algerian Authorities Arrest Leader of GIA
2005-05-01
On Saturday (30 April), the Algerian Interior Ministry announced the arrest of Armed Islamic Group (GIA) leader Boulenouar Oukil and GIA member Mohamed Chama. The operation also resulted in the seizure of a large arms cache. The GIA and other militant groups have caused violence across the country since the annulment of 1992 elections, in which Islamic groups were poised to win. The GIA is most recently suspected of killing 14 civilians on 7 April. (El Watan)
