Algeria Announces Water Price Hike
2004-12-17
charges to agriculture and industry will also be increased
The Algerian government announced on Thursday (16 December) a hefty 65 per cent increase in the price of drinking water is to take effect on 1 January 2005. Authorities said the price of a cubic metre of drinking water for households will rise from 3.8 dinars to 6.3 dinars. Water charges to agriculture and industry will also be increased. The move has been fiercely attacked in the Algerian press. Many anti-privatization campaigners fear that the moves may be a prelude to a privatization deal. (Le Jeune Independent, albawaba.com)
