Tunisian tourism officials expect the number of German visitors to exceed 610,000 by the end of the year, a solid rise over 2003. However, the figure is far behind the all-time high of 1m German tourists who traveled to the country in 1999. After the September 11 attacks on the United States, Western tourism to the Arab world witnessed a significant decline. Only the French visit Tunisia in greater numbers than the Germans.
