Renowned Tunisian writer and former cabinet member Mahmoud Messadi died Thursday (16 December) at the age of 93. He was known for his landmark plays and literary works in Arabic, such as "Al Sadd" (The Dam) and "Haddatha Abu Hurayra" (Abu Hurayra Spoke), both published in 1973. Messadi also authored a book in French in 1981.
Messadi attempted to reconcile Islamic philosophy with existentialism
According to critics, Messadi attempted to reconcile Islamic philosophy with existentialism in his works. As minister of national education between 1958 and 1968, he played a crucial role in establishing the bases for universal education in post-independent Tunisia. During his tenure, the University of Tunis was created in 1960. He served afterwards as Minister of Culture and speaker of Parliament. (La Presse, Babnet)
