2004-12-16
According to the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) conducted every four years on fourth through eighth-graders, Tunisia ranked 36th among 46 countries and Morocco was 41st. The 2003 study, found that compared to the international average scale score of 467 in eighth-grade science, Tunisia's average stood at 410 and Morocco's was 387.
In addition to Morocco and Tunisia -- Lebanon, Egypt, Bahrain, the Palestinian Authority, Syria and Saudi Arabia were the other Arab countries that participated in the study. TIMSS is a collaborative research project sponsored by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, which is directed by the International Study Centre in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College in the United States.
The study aims to help countries all over the world improve student learning in math and science. It collects educational achievement data to provide information about trends in performance over time, together with extensive background information to address concerns about the quantity, quality and content of instruction.
