US MEPI Program to Receive $75m
2004-12-16
The United States government allocated more than $5 billion in assistance for countries in the Middle East for fiscal year 2005. Notable in the foreign aid programme is funding for the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), launched in December 2002, for which an additional $150m was requested for 2005. The final congressional allocation is $75m.
MEPI was implemented specifically to focus on targeted assistance to support economic, democracy and civil society programmes in countries of the Middle East and North Africa. Special initiatives supporting education and women's empowerment programmes are also under way. MEPI is also designed to promote President Bush's vision of creating a Middle East free trade area by 2013. (US State Department)
