According to Tunisian press reports, the communities of Sfax and Gabes launched a campaign to rid their beaches of phosphate pollution several months ago. The region's 500,000 residents are now joining a campaign to raise the remaining funds to finish the clean-up. Following an awareness campaign, local residents are more concerned about health hazards caused by phosphate pollution emanating from nearby factories. The European Bank for Investment has already committed 80m euros to the project. (albawaba.com)
