Maghreb Countries and NATO Fight Terrorism
2004-12-13
Co-operation between NATO and Algeria appears "extremely promising," a top NATO official said Sunday (12 December). Deputy Secretary-General Patrick Hardouin, in Algeria for a seminar on dialogue between the Atlantic Alliance and the Mediterranean basin, said fighting terrorism is now a priority area for co-operation with Algeria and other countries of the Mediterranean basin.
Member nations of NATO and Algeria share common security interests
"Member nations of NATO and Algeria share common security interests over terrorism," Hardouin said. Algeria has been engaged since 1992 in a battle with Islamic insurgents that has left an estimated 120,000 people dead. Currently, security forces appear largely to have vanquished the insurgents. "The anti-terrorist fight is one of the priority domains for a larger and more ambitious co-operation with Mediterranean countries," Hardouin said.
In November, NATO agreed to step up counter-intelligence exchanges with Israel and the six Muslim countries -- Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan and Mauritania -- that are members of NATO's decade-old Mediterranean Dialogue program. (AP)
