Algerian Minister of Agriculture Said Barakat warned Saturday (11 December) at the Algerian-Mozambican business forum about the regional locust risk predicted for February and March. For Algeria, the estimated damage from 2003 has been over 17m euros. The minister criticized countries that still hesitate to provide all of the promised international aid to needy nations. While stressing the fact that Algeria possesses the technical means to help it deal with the locust invasion, Barkat noted that the upcoming months, especially between February and March, would be critical. The country works in coordination with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to persuade donor countries and international organizations of the necessity to help ensure that $100m dollars is available to deal with the particularly dangerous desert locust invasion.
