Algerian Family Code Revisions Proposed
2004-12-09
On Wednesday (8 December), the Algerian cabinet adopted a new law to reform aspects of the family code. According to Liberte Algerie, the government aims to implement the recommendations presented by the country's judicial reform committee. The proposed law now goes before a vote in Parliament.
The proposed law calls for changes in the divorce code and the supervision of familial conflicts that involve children. A similar set of reforms was presented to Parliament in 2001, but did not pass because of opposition from conservatives. Algerian Justice Minister Tayeb Belaiz is determined to make sure that a repeat of 2001 does not happen.
