The Union of Arab Journalists (UAJ) calls for press freedom and democracy in the Arab world to mark Universal Human Rights Day on 10 December. In a statement signed by Secretary-General Salaheddin Hafez, the UAJ said "it is an opportunity of paramount importance because universal conscience must strive for fundamental human rights -- mainly social, economic, cultural and political rights -- and most and foremost freedom of speech and press freedom and the right for people to be empowered by free elections."
