Tunisian President Zine El Dine Ben Ali extended condolences to the family of Haim Madar, chief rabbi of the country, who died on Friday (3 December). Ben Ali also sent a message of condolence to the Chief Rabbi of Jerba in which he conveyed "to all members of the Tunisian Jewish community his sincere condolences and expressions of sympathy."
A Tunisian Jewish community announcement published in the nation’s newspapers said, "The Chief Rabbi has left us after a long and painful sickness. He was a man of great piety and great culture." Tunisia is thought to have the oldest Jewish community among the Maghreb countries. (albawaba.com)
