Tunisian journalist Sihem Bensedrine, recipient of the Canadian 2004 International Press Freedom Award for her fight for media freedom in Tunisia, said she would organise a counter-conference during the UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) meeting scheduled in Tunis next year.
Bensedrine faced continual government harassment for many years working as a reporter and editor-in-chief at five newspapers, several of which were banned by the government, including Kalima! and Blanc sur Noir. Although blocked by her government from participating in the WSIS, Bensedrine plans to organise a "Contra-Conference against the Summit," that will include national and international human rights organisations.
