Algeria Lacks Rescue Equipment
2004-11-19
Algeria lacked adequate sea-borne rescue services to handle the storms that sank the Béchar in the Port of Algiers on Saturday (13 November). In an interview on national radio, Transport Minister Mohamed Maghlaoui said rescue services could not handle the rough seas that sank the Béchar and killed seven sailors. In response to the tragedy, Maghlaoui said authorities would buy three tugboats for the deep-water ports in Algiers, Arzew and Skikda. He added that Algeria still lacks a maritime helicopter system.
