2004-11-18
Tunisian President Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali paid homage to Yasser Arafat on Wednesday (17 November) at his swearing in ceremony. Ben Ali won re-election last month. According to the Tunisian press, Ben Ali expressed great sadness over the death of Palestinian leader. He asked members of parliament to observe a moment of silence out of respect for Arafat and to express solidarity with the Palestinian people. Ben Ali also called for the revival of the peace process and reform in the Arab world. Arafat lived in Tunisia and made Tunis his base for over a decade after being expelled from Lebanon.
